5 Swimsuit Rules You Should Break this Summer

swimsuit rules to break

If you guys have been following along for awhile, you may know that I’m kind of obsessed with swimwear. What can I say? It’s the California girl in me! I just really love all the different colors, prints and styles. There are so many gorgeous swimwear options for this summer, but I feel like there are so many “swimsuit rules” to follow. People are always touting these rules like it’s the freaking summer bible or something. Like, don’t wear a bikini unless you’re size 2. Don’t wear prints. Avoid ruffles and don’t you dare feel confident! It’s kind of infuriating annoying, actually, so I thought I would share my personal swimsuit rules that I think you should definitely break this summer. I’ve also included some designer swimwear, plus size swimwear, eco-friendly swim options, and some beauty essentials you should have on hand whenever you head out the the beach, pool or lake ♥

5 Swimsuit Rules You Should Break this Summer

Don’t Wear A Bikini Unless You’re A Size 2.

This one pisses me off so much. Whether you’re a size 0 or a size 20, you should definitely wear a bikini. There are adorable high waisted bikinis these days for plus size ladies to wear comfortably and there are straight sized ones too. Alternatively, there are both straight and plus size conventional bikinis. No matter how insecure you may feel, you should wear a bikini at least once in your life, just for the sake of doing it. Embrace your body, enjoy yourself, and love yourself enough to live life fully – without letting others dictate what you should and shouldn’t wear.

img (1)

Avoid Prints.

Seriously? That’s like saying you can’t have any spice in your food. Prints can be so much fun, especially when it comes to summer fashion and I think everyone should wear them. After all, I’m sure everyone can agree there’s at least one print out there you like whether it’s stripes, floral, tropical, or palm print.

Moms Can’t Look Cute.

But why though? I know some seriously hot moms and it would be a damn shame if they had to wear unflattering one piece swimsuits for the rest of their existence simply because they birthed some babies. It’s just ridiculous to think that moms are not sexy. They totally are the power women of the world and they should look their best, including on the beach!

Don’t Be Too Sexy.

Sorry, but what kind of rule is that? Whenever people tell me they can’t wear something because it’s “too sexy” or that they can’t go to the pool in something revealing, I have to suppress an inner groan and eye roll. I mean, yes, to a certain extent, you probably shouldn’t wear your thong bikini to your family pool party, but hey, if you want to, I support! And in other social situations, you have every right to look as sexy or modest as you like. Nobody owns your body but you. It disturbs me when others try to dictate how other people dress. It’s none of their damn business and it doesn’t give people license to comment, touch or otherwise if you decide to wear something a little more sexy. Live it up, girl! I support ya!

img (1)

Don’t Feel Confident.

It seems to me that there’s this bizarre, unspoken rule about wearing a swimsuit and not wanting to appear too confident or just plain not feeling confident. In the first, it’s ridiculous to downplay feeling good about yourself in any situation, but it seems like girls and women alike compete for this. Maybe we all have crippling insecurity, but it’s got to stop. We have to change the way we talk to ourselves and about ourselves! So, whether you truly don’t feel confident or you’re simply down playing yourself to avoid looking vain, do me a favor and just DON’T.

And now that we’ve all become bonafied rule breakers up in here, it’s time to shop for a one piece, bikini or tankini that you love, feel great in, and flaunts your asssssets!

I love the idea of a high waisted swimsuit but I would have to try them on first. And I totally agree with you, we shouldn’t listen to “the rules”. We should all be able to have fun and enjoy summer confidently in our swim suits

Thank you for sharing this great article. I am so happy you included the plus size women. To many people focus on the skinny beautiful models. God Bless

Loved your voice in this post! I definitely needed to hear this. I’m pregnant due next month and been dreading swimsuit season with a postpartum body. I’ve always looked great in a bikini even after my first baby but that took at least a few months! We’ll see if I can brave it this year haha

    1. June 7, 2016 at 8:50 AM

thanks so much Erika! I’m sure you look beautiful now and bringing a life into this world is an amazing thing. The most important thing is to be healthy, happy, and know that wherever you are in your own personal health journey, you can and should totally wear a cute swimsuit! And to hell with the stupid rules 😛 hope you have a great summer ♥

Love this post! I definitely want to break the don’t wear bikini rule. I am so self-conscious about my body and don’t like the way I look in a one-piece so that only leaves me with the bikini…I am looking for a super cute high waisted one so I need to check your picks above!

    1. June 7, 2016 at 1:59 PM

thanks Dana! Yeah definitely and you should! If you feel self conscious and want a suit that will make you feel and look great – check out SwimsuitsforAll – best place ever!

I love these tips… but I have never worn a bikini and I can’t imagine I’d ever start now. I MAY branch out into prints but mostly I enjoy blocked color suits. I do not have confidence on the beach and usually end up wearing a tank and shorts and sitting on the sidelines anyway.

    1. June 9, 2016 at 9:51 AM

thanks Joanne! Glad you like my tips and I hope you’ll reconsider! Even a high waist bikini gives good coverage and they look so cute! You definitely should and I hope you’ll jump into life and stop sitting on the sidelines! Life is about fun and you deserve to have a good time, whatever your age, size, etc. Get inspired by all the people wearing bikinis here > https://www.instagram.com/swimsuitsforall/ ♥ ♥ ♥

There’s so much body shame involved with wearing a swimsuit. It’s so liberating to not care about what others may think and wear what you want!

  17. June 13, 2016 at 8:53 PM

I love the positivity! Definitely I am the type to wear prints, ruffles and other cool details. This is a refreshing blog post. Every woman should embrace their inner confidence. The bathing suits you suggested are so cute! I love the brown crochet bikini the most!

  18. June 16, 2016 at 11:02 AM

I love your rules! Every woman should embrace their body and wear what makes the feel good! Love that white high waisted bikini!

Yes! I agree, I am going on 48 and I will wear a bikini. I find that if one is comfortable and confident why not? I enjoyed readying you post.

    1. June 21, 2016 at 4:28 PM

that’s so awesome Jess! I love it! I definitely think you’re right and I think we should all strive to wear what we want and wear it how we want to wear it. It’s easy to get caught up in all the “rules,” but it’s important to remember that how we feel and what we want matters too! So glad you’re rocking a bikini!

  20. June 17, 2016 at 6:59 PM

I just love your positive attitude. Thanks for sharing some great options for all of us.

  21. June 17, 2016 at 7:19 PM

love this, I was already dreading a pool party we were invited to because, after having two kids, my belly isn’t exactly small… but ya know what? I might just bust out a bikini anyways, I mean, who cares?!

    1. June 21, 2016 at 5:08 PM

yeahh! Do it! There’s no reason to dread it – you just have to find a cute bikini that suits you and you feel comfortable. hope you have fun at the pool party!

  22. June 17, 2016 at 8:00 PM

I agree with all these rules that should be broken. We need more post like this to encourage all these ladies and mama to love the body they have! Regardless if they are skinny, curvy, mamas, whatever 🙂

Love this!! Here’s to a summer of rule breaking!!

  26. June 21, 2016 at 10:33 AM

I love your comment about feeling (and showing) confidence! It seems to be a default for women to discredit compliments or talk down about themselves in an effort to not sound conceited or arrogant. I think it’s great to hear people honestly appreciate themselves. It’s a skill most of us (myself included) could definitely practice more.

  29. June 24, 2016 at 8:42 AM

All true! The worst is that moms can’t wear bikinis. Some people think that just because the mom had a child, sexy days are over…negative! You can still look classy AND sexy and be a mom in my opinion. Great tips. I would share this 1000 times if I could!

    1. June 24, 2016 at 11:24 AM

definitely! I hope you are wearing one this summer (mom or not!) 🙂 It should be fun for everyone – not just the people we deem are “good enough” or “young enough” or “fit enough” you know? Thanks so much! I’m glad you liked my post 🙂

  30. June 28, 2016 at 1:54 PM

They’re beautiful suits! Thanks for the fun break the rules thoughts.

  31. June 30, 2016 at 10:01 AM

Love this! It’s so true. I’ve been a lot braver with my swimwear this year and I am loving every moment of it! Not to mention it feels good when others compliment you on it 🙂 Beautifully Candid

    1. June 30, 2016 at 1:24 PM

thanks Sierra! I’m so glad you’re enjoying summer to the fullest and wearing what you want. It feels so liberating! Glad you’re getting compliments – well deserved girl! thanks for stopping by ♥

  32. July 27, 2016 at 2:05 PM

Great swimsuit picks! I looked at several you chose for my size! I definitely need to remember that Swimsuits for All website for next year! Any way, I totally agree with you. This soon-to-be 55 year old is still wearing a bikini. I tried on several one-piecers this year and took pictures even to try to be more objective…. and while there was nothing wrong with them, they did nothing to flatter me, the bikini won hands down.
