My Favorite Bullet Journal Tips

I don’t know about you, but I’ve become obsessed with the new bullet journal trend. Much like everyone else, I wanted to share my favorite bullet journal tips with you because it’s on my mind! I’ve found that creating a bullet journal is SUPER therapeutic, especially if you’re scatter-brained like me and need a place to dump all your thoughts, tasks, etc. Bullet journals provide that and allow me to take time out for myself, my goals, and to be creative with it all at the same time.

What is a bullet journal?

If you’re unfamiliar, a bullet journal is an empty journal where you put everything you want to track. This can include a number of things for your year, each month, or each week. People use them for so many different things; just search “bullet journal” on google or pinterest and you’ll see!

To fully understand bullet journals and all their possible uses, it’s best to watch the tons of amazing bullet journal tutorials on YouTube. They don’t always sufficiently explain what bullet journals are (or can be), but after you watch a few, you will begin to see the possibilities for YOUR bullet journal.

How to Start a Bullet Journal:

The best way to start a bullet journal is to purchase an empty journal and pull out your favorite pens and markers. I got this grid bullet journal 2 pack from Amazon, but you can use any empty journal you have on hand. Then, write down all the ways you think you might want to use your bullet journal. Will it be a monthly planner? Might you use it to track your savings, pay off debt, track your habits or mood, journal gratitude, plan out your exercise routines, or log your food?

The possibilities are literally infinite and the point of bullet journals are to make it into the perfect journal or planner for YOUR personal needs.

That’s what makes them so awesome. You don’t need to buy an expensive planner or anything. It’s possible to create one for yourself and while some people complain that it’s very time-consuming, I beg to differ. You can design your bullet journal to only include the things you want to track. It can be created with the visuals and style you prefer and for your own personal goals.

Bullet Journal Tips

While I think bullet journals are awesome once you get started, I understand that the prospect of beginning can be intimidating. Because of this, I’m sharing my best bullet journal tips to help you succeed AND enjoy the process.

  • Watch tons of bullet journal tutorials and videos! These will help you determine the best way to use your bullet journal for your personal goals, needs and lifestyle.
  • Write your ideas down before you begin. Before you even think of starting your bullet journal, I recommend writing out all the ways you think you might want to use it. Do you want a mood tracker, a weekly spread, and a food log? Or maybe you want to track your monthly goals and meal prep. Is it for personal or professional use?
  • Search for bullet journals on pinterest. Once you have a clear idea of how to use your bullet journal, I urge you to do searches on pinterest for the trackers and spread you most want to employ. This might include searches such as “mood tracker” or “weight loss tracker.” Otherwise, it might be a place for you to track your week’s projects or work tasks and, in that case, you may want to search for “weekly spread” or “monthly goal tracker bullet journal.”
  • Begin! Once I finally had an idea of what I wanted to use my bullet journal for, I got excited, but I still felt confused and intimidated by the concept. So what did I do? I started it anyway! Bullet journals are one of those things you get better at with practice so just dive in and have fun. Get creative. Express yourself. It’s one of the many reasons bullet journals are so enjoyable.
