Woman Crush Wednesday

 J.K. Rowling

J.K. Rowling is, pretty much, my ultimate idol. Sure, she’s not a fashion icon or an actress; she’s just a real person. She’s also the author of the Harry Potter book series and one of my favorite sources of inspiration. As you might know, I’m a huge fan of Harry Potter, but what you might not know is that the books series had such a huge impact on my life that you could almost say they “raised me” in a way.

I don’t normally share incredibly personal things on this blog (as it’s about beauty, fashion and health mainly), but it’s hard for me not to make it personal when it comes to Harry Potter and it’s beloved author. Growing up and coming from what the 90’s called a “broken home,” you could safely say I spent most of my time, locked away in my bedroom, reading the Harry Potter books many times over. In a lot of ways, they were my closest friends. It’s not that I didn’t have friends, but when you come from a violent divorce and parents who don’t speak to each other (to this day), it can be difficult for a child to relate to others. For me, I turned to books to cope.

I escaped into fantasy worlds to make sense of my reality and I can honestly say that Harry Potter saved me. Harry Potter inspired me to read, to learn, and to question things in real life. If you haven’t read Harry Potter, you might not be able to understand and for that, I urge you to read the books. They might seem like children’s books alone, but they are so much more than that. The underlying questions that the books ask are age old ones that we all ask well into adulthood. So, for that, I thank J.K. Rowling. Without these stories to teach me about life, I really don’t where I would’ve ended up. I’m not saying I’d be drugged up or anything like that, but when something has such a profoundly positive effect on your life, it’s hard not to give credit where credit is due.

J.K. Rowling, besides being the author of the Harry Potter books, is a seriously brilliant woman. She has so much wisdom to impart and I think I’d be selling you short if I didn’t share some of her wonderful words. So, today’s post is sharing some of my favorite quotes from J.K. Rowling and why I love them. That said, if you want more, read the books; they’re a treasure trove of great lines.

Awesome J.K. Rowling Quotes ♥

via Total Beauty

I so admire someone who values the person and not the appearance. It can be hard to look past appearances, but really it’s the inside of a person, in my opinion, that makes them beautiful and not the other way around. The inside beauty of a person can make them beautiful, to me, on the outside and the exact same can be true of people who are ugly on the inside and pretty out.

This has inspired me again and again. Every time I felt like I had hit my rock bottom. Every time things didn’t work out. Every time I felt hopeless. These were the words running in my head. If J.K. Rowling can do it, so can we!

I LOVE this quote and I’m sure I’m not alone! It’s so easy to play life safe, but this reminds me to take the leap. Go for the goal. Try, even if it’s just the first small step. You won’t regret it.

I think this quote is one many women can relate to because we’re, so often, forced into a box. Be a woman. Be feminine. Be a mother. Be a housewife. Be sexy. Be young. Be whatever I say. Thankfully, that’s slowly, but surely, changing and I think it’s so important for parents to teach their children that they don’t have to be sexy or pretty. They can be smart and sincere, stubborn and tough. Hermione was my biggest idol growing up. Sure, she could be annoying and bossy, but she had principles. She never gave up on something. No question was too difficult to go unanswered. I love that about her character. It reminds me that I don’t have to settle for being (or maybe just acting) dumb and pretty because the world says so. I can be bookish, smart, stubborn, and unique.

The last one is one that reminds me to be fearless. Because, as Dumbledore says, “Death is but the next great adventure…”

I’ll leave you with this…
