I’ve been kind of obsessed with TV lately. You know, a little more than my usual and I like to think it’s the fault of both Netflix and Hulu because I don’t recall being this glued to the screen back when I had regular cable. Without the massive amounts of ads and tons of entire seasons of TV shows at my fingertips, I’ve discovered so many awesome new shows and I thought it would be fun to share my current top 3 latest discoveries with you all in case, like me, you are obsessed with online streaming via Netflix and/or Hulu.
TV Shows I’ve Been Watching Lately
My boyfriend and I randomly discovered this new show on Hulu, but for those of you who have cable, it’s on the CW. This show kind of snuck up on me. Initially, I didn’t think I would like it because it appeared to be just a re-hash of Zombieland with a female lead. Upon further watching this show, I found that it’s actually a lot more like Grimm than Zombieland. The story follows Liv, a medical student turned zombie, who works at the local morgue and helps solve crimes after eating the brains of crime victims.
The show is both hilarious and heartfelt. It has a lot of character and still comes off as fresh and unique amidst a horror sub-genre that, at this point, has been done to death. I like the characters of the show and I think that’s what definitely stands out about it and makes me want to keep coming back each week for another episode.
The Secret Circle
The Secret Circle is a one season show that was cancelled after season 1 because the CW thought it was too expensive to make which totally sucks because this show is AWESOME! It ends on a somewhat cliffhanger, but if you like stories about witches, covens, and teen angst, then you’ll enjoy this one a lot! The story follows Cassie Blake who goes to live with her grandmother in Chance Harbor after her mother tragically dies in a fire. She’s then confronted by a group of local kids who claim she’s a witch and the 6th member who can complete their witch circle. There’s a lot more to it than that, but the story is really good, there’s tons of mystery, intrigue, and love to keep you hooked the entire way through. I pretty much was glued to the couch every day after work for about a week or two, including when I was walking on the treadmill. I know; I have problems.
This last one is a more recent discovery of mine (as in still watching!). All seasons of this show are on Netflix except the most recent one (season 5, I think) which is available in Canada on Showcase and in the USA via SyFy. The show follows Bo, a succubus, who finds out she’s a faerie and must choose a side: light or dark. Along with her trusty (and hilarious) sidekick, Kenzie, the two help solve mysterious crimes and work to unveil Bo’s mysterious past.
The show is both based in reality and fantasy. The faerie world is really just a side interest to the main plot of : who is Bo, really? All the characters are totally memorable and they all seem to have interesting lives. In fact, I’d argue that some of the supporting characters seem to be even more interesting than the main character, herself, but that’s just my Kenzie favoritism coming out. You can watch seasons 1-4 on Netflix and it looks like SyFy.com has the epsiodes of the most recent season available online as well. If Canadian shows are your thing, definitely check out another great one – Orphan Black – as the latest third season just started!
