7 Things Preventing You From Having Great Skin

There’s nothing worse than struggling with your skin. Whether it’s acne, redness, or just a lack of satisfaction with your current skincare routine, the struggle is real! Even now, I find myself switching things up to figure out what works best for my skin, but I do see that I’ve reached a point where I’ve discovered some things that have truly affected my skin in the long term. These are things that I have either trained myself to do or to avoid and that’s made all the difference in the world for my skin. Because of that, I thought I would share a few possible things preventing you from having great skin.

You are a complete cheapskate when it comes to products.

I’m not saying you need to spend a fortune on beauty products, but you should be willing to invest a little bit to see results. There’s a reason the crappy products from the drugstore really don’t work and it’s because they’re usually formulated with 95% filler (water or chemical junk), 2-3% preservatives, and 2-3% active ingredients. I’m just saying. You can invest in good skincare by purchasing affordable green beauty, too; it doesn’t need to break the bank!

You refuse to wear sunscreen.

This is so simple, but it’s HUGE! Sunscreen can prevent the majority of premature aging just by applying every day, consistently, and making sure you reapply whenever you’re in the sun for a prolonged amount of time. Whether you’re an albino white girl, Latin, or African, you still need to wear sunscreen if you want to prevent premature aging AND skin cancer. Know your family history to assess your risk for cancer and understand the necessities of wearing sunscreen already, especially when you’re at the pool or beach.

You think face oils will break you out.

You guys, this is just super dated thinking at this point. The important aspect of this is to use the RIGHT kind of face oils for your skin type and only with formulas that include skin-friendly, high quality ingredients. Face oils can make all the difference in the world to your skin. They can help heal acne, scarring, discoloration, brighten, and help hydrate your skin.

You’re still using toxic products on your skin.

Again, I feel like this is old world thinking to still be using toxic products on your skin, but I wanted to mention it just in case you are! There’s no judgment here, but you should know that toxic skincare and cosmetics will age your skin faster, over time, and with continued use. Chemical ingredients and preservatives such as parabens are linked to premature aging for a reason, you guys, and if you’re using conventional foundations and skincare products, those are likely included in the formula.

You forget about the effect diet and lifestyle have on your skin.

I talk to so many people about skin problems and the majority seem to forget about the diet and lifestyle aspect of skin. If you’re eating a diet high in sugar, processed foods, and other junk, you can expect your skin will suffer the consequences right along with your health. That’s just the way it goes. Things like lack of sleep, stress, smoking, and other drugs will have a negative impact as well.

You sleep with your makeup on.

Sleeping with your makeup on is just dumb. I know what it’s like to get home late and not want to deal with whatever makeup you didn’t sweat out at the club, but seriously, leaving your makeup on does so much damage to your skin. It causes acne, wrinkles, and dries your skin out. Applying a cleansing oil or balm before bed to, at least, try to get all that makeup off your skin will do wonders AND it’s relaxing!

You stress the f*ck out about everything.

I’m totally guilty of this one, but I’ve been working hard to not freak out about things and stay zen. My skin thanks me by not giving me acne breakouts and I feel a lot better, in general. I think a lot of people tend to overlook stress as a possible cause for their issues, skin or otherwise, but it’s important to remember that stress is such a powerful thing and we need to learn how to relieve stress to minimize it’s damage. I read somewhere that stress can not only affect obvious things like your sleep and skin, but it can actually lower your metabolism and raise your cholesterol. If that’s not motivation enough, I don’t know what is!
