Happy Tuesday!

I hope you’re all having a fantastic day so far and enjoying the week. I’ve been kind of scatter brained lately and fell off a bit on my early morning workouts, but I’ll jump right back on tomorrow morning with that so, it happens. I’ve been pretty on with my eating, except for this past weekend which was pretty off all weekend. Thank goodness I was able to just maintain my weight instead of gain so I’m grateful for that. I’m kicking it into high gear this week and really buckling down with my diet and fitness plans so I can keep on the right track. So with all that on my mind, I thought I’d better update with my goals for this month while it’s still semi-early in the month, though I’m a bit late in posting.

Here’s Last Month’s Goals & How I Did:

  1. Make More Money AND Save More Money. I actually got a raise in the new year (yay!!) and I am still working on saving a bit. I am on the right track, though, so I just need to stay on it.
  2. Organize My Closet, Room & Bathroom Areas! I haven’t done this AT ALL. It so needs to get done, but I’d really like to purchase some organizers for this project and I haven’t been able to do that yet so when I do, it’s more likely to happen.
  3. Stay Consistent With the Gym & Working Out 5-6 Times Per Week. I’ve been really consistent on going to the gym and working out if I wasn’t able to go so I’m happy about that!
  4. Stay Consistent With Healthy Eating. With my diet, I’ve been really on or just okay and rarely have I been just completely off. This weekend I did slip up a bit, but I was back on track by Sunday so I’m glad I have been okay with that. I’d like to keep on with this and be more consistent with making my lunch for the week.
  5. Lose 10-15 pounds. I actually did lose 8 pounds in the past month or so since January so yay! I know it’s not the 15 pounds I wanted, but it’s a start.
  6. Be A More Romantic Girlfriend. I think I’ve been doing okay at this. We’ve been taking time to go watch films together and hang out a bit, but I would like to plan more things to do on the weekend as well.

My Goals for this Month:

  • Make My Lunches for the Week More Consistently. I have been pretty consistent where healthy eating is concerned, but I admit I’ve been eating out way too much this past week and it’s mostly due to my being too tired or too lazy to prepare my lunches for the week so starting clean this week with my lunches all prepared, I’d really like to keep on with making my lunches each week because it does keep my healthy eating on track.
  • Go to the Gym 5-6 Times Per Week ( 4 Times At 5 AM During Week ). I’ve been really good with this, but I just like a nice reminder. The only thing I really fell off with was my morning workouts. With daylight savings “Spring Forward” with the clock going forward an hour, it’s been tough.
  • Do More Fun & New Things With My Boyfriend. As I said, we’ve been going to see films together and hanging out, but I’d like to plan more things for us to do and I’d like us to go on a mini vacation sometime this Summer or something. Anyone have any ideas to recommend?
  • Organize My Bathroom & Closet. This just NEEDS to get done. I will be picking up the organizing boxes, dividers and shelving sometime this month and it WILL happen.
  • Save Money. It’s still on my list and it will happen soon.
  • Lose 10-15 Pounds. I know it’s ambitious, but I’m keeping this on my list because I really need to motivate myself with weight loss so I’m keeping it on here so it stays on my mind.
  • Get Up At 4 AM Tues-Friday for My Morning Workouts. As I said above, my morning workout has fallen off and I’d like to get back to that so I’ll be going back to my 4AM wake up times this week and going on through this month. I really enjoyed the improved energy and focus I got from getting up earlier and getting my workout done first thing.
  • Spring Clean. This is just a general note to clean out my closet, clean out my bathroom and get rid of junk and clutter that’s been sitting around catching dust.

What are your goals for March?

Let me know in the comments below!

TipsforMediaPRWorkingwithBloggers

We’ve all had different experiences when it comes to working with Media & PR in different ways; some good, some just okay, and some not so pleasant. That being said, this is all from my own personal experience. I don’t claim to be an expert on this at all. I am simply sharing my own thoughts on the topic. That being said, I am not writing this to attack media and PR people. I have worked with a lot of people from various small and larger brands and companies and they’ve been good and bad across the board, despite where that company may have stood in the hierarchy of things. I’m writing this in the hopes that media and PR might view bloggers a little more like people and personalities that can really help them out if they are treated properly rather than a high ( or low ) stat website or page rank.

Past that disclaimer, I’ve wanted to do a much requested post on how bloggers can go about working with brands and PR and tips for the bloggers (which I have in progress for future!) , but then I started thinking about all the tips you could give to media & PR which not too many people seem to talk about. It actually seems like it’s more important how bloggers act toward media and PR than it is how media and PR act towards bloggers, but I think it’s a 2 way street. I understand that media and PR are the ones holding the pocket book or samples or exposure or whatever it is, as it were, but I also feel that bloggers often get snubbed, taken advantage of, and really treated a bit less than, especially for the amount of work they put in. So, with that, here are my tips for media and PR when working with bloggers and I hope it’s of help to some.

  1. Be Straight With Us. It really annoys me when PR people from a company write me back about how great my blog is and then tell me they can’t send anything for review because of whatever reason, but are vague on the reason itself. I don’t mind rejection, believe me, but what annoys me is that I’m left wondering the reason and lost on what it was. I really only write to people whose brands I really want to try, but I do understand if my numbers aren’t up to your standards or you don’t have anymore samples in your budget to give out and that’s fine. I would feel a lot better about the situation if people were more honest with me about why I’m being rejected, so to speak, because 1. I appreciate the honesty and 2. it will help me as a blogger in the long run if I know the reason. If it’s my numbers, okay, that will come in time. If it’s your budget, that’s understandable. If it’s that you hate my blog, I would still like to know your thoughts. This will actually help me improve over time. I feel like PR reps often neglect this like they think I’m made of glass. I know you’re all very busy and you have very little time, but a small bit of effort to push me in the right direction would always be much appreciated, if you can hack it.
  2. Have Some Humility. I’m not saying that all PR people are cocky bastards so don’t bite my head off before reading! What I mean is that, some PR people have a tendency to talk up their brand and then ask me to blog about their company just because “We’re that awesome.” And you know, that’s great. Maybe you are and maybe I will or won’t, but your attitude pretty much ensures that I definitely will NOT. There is such a fine line between confidence and cocky and I know it must be hard to fly right, but it can be so annoying and a bit insulting when PR’s write me talking up my blog in the efforts of trying to get me to write about their brand for no reason at all, even if I’ve never heard of them. Believe me, if you’re a great brand, I’ll likely hear about it in the “blog-o-sphere” and end up writing about it, but I’ll do it in my time. The amazing thing about being a “lowly” blogger like myself means that I work on my time. Not yours. On the other hand, I’ve worked with LOADS of amazing PR reps who are humble, amazing, generous, and very helpful. They are not pushy or rude or overbearing and they are the kind of people I’m willing to help out and they are usually on board with brands that really ARE great, but coincidentally don’t feel the need to tell me so.
  3. Know That Blogger Does Not Equal Free Work Horse. I feel like a lot of PR people have it in their mind that bloggers are sad little desperate and homeless writers, looking for any penny they can spare, and that any little sample they throw our way will be met with hours of free work to promote their brand. Nothing is more annoying or insulting than this and believe me, bloggers are not stupid. We will certainly pick up on your less-than-honorable motives. If I really love your brand or product, it’s likely I will share it with the world, but don’t expect an essay or novel. If it ends out that I’ve written a more detailed post, then that’s great, but if not, don’t expect more. You’re not paying me to write about said product or brand so how I do so is my choice. You don’t pay my bills so please don’t act like it. You wouldn’t like it if I did that to you.
  4. Be Nice To Us and We’ll Be Nice To You. I’m not saying I’m willing to lie about a product or brand if they’re kind to me because I’d never do that anyway, but I will certainly go the extra mile in how I go about posting if they are nice. I love beauty products and I love when a company is kind enough to send me samples (what blogger doesn’t?), but that doesn’t mean I’ll be lying about my experiences any day soon. I pride myself on honest reviews, irregardless, but I will certainly put my best foot forward for a brand if they treat me well and I think how they treat bloggers says a lot about them as a company on the whole that will definitely trickle down to consumers.
  5. Bloggers Are Not Stupid – Act Accordingly. For some reason, and this only seems to happen when I’ve been approached for writing sponsored posts, I really get treated like I am an absolute moron by companies. They aren’t polite and they don’t even really describe what they want. I’m not against writing sponsored posts if the company is in line with my blog and if I like the company, but if your company is so out of left field, please don’t act like I won’t notice. It seems like some companies think bloggers are just idiotically posting whatever about whatever for money and in that, I think they need to really read up on who we are as bloggers because it’s coming off as a bit out of touch.
  6. Please Don’t Assume I Can Be Bought Off for $5. I understand that what you get paid should equate what you’re delivering to a certain company and, by that, I mean, I know if I am a smaller blog with less than a million readers, the payment that I get offered ( if there even is one being offered ) will be much less than a bigger blog and that’s fine. I mostly avoid paid offers because I’m not willing to work on their time for such a low price, but to each his/her own. Anyway, I’ve been getting this a lot lately where people write me wanting to guest post on my blog about [insert generic topic here] and link back to their spammy looking website and they’ve even offered to paypal me some money in return. ( Oh snap! ) The problem with that is what they are usually offering to give me is pennies on the dollar and it’s almost laughable to think I’d sell my blog out for $5, but people have the audacity to approach me like I’m a beggar. Please don’t make the same mistake. I’m not saying this because I think I’m better than that, but I am and I hope all bloggers are. I want the bar for bloggers to be set high, but I think a lot of bloggers maybe don’t know how much they should get paid for their work and at the same time it seems like a lot of companies don’t really know how much they should get paid either.
  7. Please Don’t Approach Me If Your Brand Doesn’t Fit My Blog. This sort of goes back onto what I was saying about bloggers not being stupid. It’s such an annoying waste of my time ( and yours ) to email me about doing a sponsored post on your brand when your brand is home appliances and that’s obviously not what this blog is about. It doesn’t make sense for either of us.

So, I know that was kind of long winded, but I hope you got something from it or enjoyed reading it anyway. If you’re a blogger, I don’t want you to think that working with brands and companies will be horrible because that’s mostly not the case. I have had nearly all good experiences with most of the people I’ve collaborated with. For media and PR people, please don’t hate me for posting on this. It’s not all of you – it’s only a few that have really made you look less than stellar. And for everyone, whoever you are, I am not targeting you so please try not to take the post personally and rather, I hope we can all learn from our experiences and grow together.

Happy Friday All!

I hope you’ve had a fantastic week and are looking forward to an even better weekend!

Today’s post focuses on a few tips and tricks I’ve come up with to help you reach your goals, whether it’s to lose weight, become more fit or simply be healthier in 2013. I personally love reading posts about health and fitness and watching videos because I find them really interesting, but I also find that so many people are truly vague when it comes to the whole “how I did it” part of things. They say things like “I worked really hard” or ” I worked out every day” or ” I ate healthier” without explaining the specifics and I’m all about the specifics so here are some that have helped me in my own journey and I hope they help you too!

  1. Buy A 16-64 Oz. Water Canteen. This was something I unintentionally stumbled upon because I really had been wanting a more eco friendly way of getting my water quota for each day without drinking a million and one plastic water bottles, but ever since I got my aluminum water bottle (16 oz) from Target (you may have seen if you follow me @StorybookBeauty on Instagram), I find that it’s SO much easier to get my water in. I have a little rule for this canteen, though, and that is that it’s only for water and tea so in the morning, if it’s freezing, I’ll enjoy some unsweetened tea and then directly after drink water. It’s easier to keep track of the amount of water I need to drink as well because I know I need to have around 64 Oz or more per day so if I drink 4 of these, at least, I’m good. I know it seems like a really little thing, but water has a LOT to do with weight loss, fitness performance, and your overall health. For you beauty mavens, it also has a huge impact on your skin and fighting off free radical damage and consequent wrinkles!
  2. Drink More Green Juices & Smoothies. I am SO busy during the week and it can be tough to get all 5-7 servings of fruits and veggies in since I’m running around all the time, but drinking them in smoothies has helped me immensely in reaching this goal. It’s simply too cold, at the moment, to be eating salad every day and I don’t really want it when it’s cold – I’d prefer soup so this helps give me added nutrients during the day. If you want straight vitamins, make your own juices – it’s light and easily customizable for your needs, but won’t make you super full like a smoothie might. On the other hand, smoothies are great for getting in your greens and lots of fiber so you stay full, get your nutrients AND it will help you shed weight. If you’re new to green smoothies, I recommend adding spinach in to any fruit smoothie recipe – the color may put you off, but it will taste delicious when blended as spinach has very little taste when blended with fruits. Another easy one to get in is cucumbers because they are just refreshing and add more nutrient dense water to your smoothie with very little taste effect. It’s actually better to eat a cucumber if you feel tired (as opposed to coffee or an energy drink) because it has most of the nutrients you need for the day. Crazy, right? Once you get more accustomed to that, you can add others like kale, collard greens, broccoli, fennel, celery, etc. If you’re still not motivated to drink them, it might help to know that drinking smoothies like this makes your skin clearer, more hydrated, and glowing and helps stave off wrinkles!
  3. Exercise 30 Minutes a Day or More Doing Cardio. If you are maintaining your weight, 30 minutes a day of any kind of cardiovascular movement is fine. This means anything from bike riding, running, the treadmill, or elliptical to basketball, walking, or tennis. Just get moving. Even playing XBox Kinect can count, though it may not challenge you nearly as much as actual fitness would so keep that in mind. If you’re NOT trying to maintain, but want to lose weight, you need to be putting in 45 minutes to 1 hour of Cardio at least 3 times per week. I know this is debated a LOT and this is just my personal opinion – you know what is best for you and if not, please consult your physician first! – but I personally believe you need at least an hour to help burn off excess.
  4. Do 30 Minutes of Strength Training 2 Times Per Week. It’s really important to tone and muscle build to get a tight, toned physique and you get that by strength training. In the beginning, if you have a lot of weight to lose, cardio alone is fine, but after you’ve lost some weight, you’ll want to add in weight training to build your muscles up and also TONE them. This is to tighten your body and give you that defined look. If you’re a female and you’re worried about getting bulky, don’t be. It is IMPOSSIBLE for you to do so without steroids. As women, we don’t produce enough testosterone to get that type of body without the help of steroids.
  5. Buy A Pedometer. This may or may not work for you, depending on your lifestyle and where you live. For me, it didn’t work that well because I live in a bad neighborhood where I don’t walk outside much and I drive everywhere I go during the day because I work about 30 minutes from my house. That being said, if you live in an area with a good bus line, train, or you can walk to and from work or around your neighborhood, this might be really great for you. It basically counts your steps for you while you wear it. Most need to be worn on your pants pocket or shirt lapel to work properly, but they sell some more expensive ones that you can put in your shoes (like the one by Nike). If you want a cheap one, it’ll only cost you like $5 or so. The more expensive ones can get in the $100 range. Just choose one that will work for you. 5,000 – 10,000 steps a day is a good, attainable goal and will ensure you walk a couple of miles a day without putting too much effort in.
  6. Plan EVERYTHING in Detail. You may or may not need to do this. Personally, I am much more successful when I plan it all out. For my food, I’ve planned out the entire menu for the week for my breakfast, lunch and snacks. I looked up clean eating recipes and picked my favorites out. I wrote the recipes down and then I wrote up a grocery list. I did most of my prepping on the day that I bought my groceries and cooked the first 2 days of meals on the same day to make my week a little easier. I stored things in either tupperwares or mason jars and it’s worked out really well. Since I planned it all out, I didn’t have to think about what was for lunch or breakfast and I have not been hungry all week because of it. For breakfast, I’ve had mostly smoothies or juices, but you can eat what you like. I recommend throwing in some smoothies or juices to get your greens quota in, but it’s up to you. You can add in greens and veggies also by adding them to omelets, eating salads, veggie soups, etc. Just make sure you eat what you like and planning will make your life easier.
  7. Less Grain & Meat, More Green. I know, for a lot of people, it can be difficult to do this if you’re used to eating meals that are mostly all meat and grain, but it’s really important to get 5 servings of vegetables a day in so I recommend focusing your meals around your vegetables instead of your meat or grain.
  8. Laugh Often. So many people work to get in shape and be fit, but they seldom think about the emotional bit and I think it has so much to do with succeeding versus failing. I once learned in a Psychology class that 80% of personality is perception and how we view things so if we see the glass as half full, it is. I think laughing helps a lot with optimism and seeing the world and your life in a positive life so remember to laugh a bit daily, even if that means watching stand up comedy or hanging with your friends – just do it. You need it as a human being to stay sane.
  9. Get a Good Motivating Playlist. This one is not really “necessary,” but it’s something that has really helped my motivation in terms of how hard I work out at the gym and how hard I try during exercises because music has an emotional effect on us. Fast music = move fast while slow music will inevitably make you want to go slower so you match the tempo. So, I have a super upbeat and motivating playlist of songs that I really love and find really inspiring. You can see that playlist in the post I wrote yesterday – here.
  10. Don’t Give Up – Consistency is KEY. I have tried so many times to lose weight throughout my life – I think that’s true for most people, especially if you’re female. The problem is that once I would get started, I would give up at the first sign of trouble. Or I would get lazy and give up. Either way, I never stayed consistent enough to see results. The biggest thing you need when trying to lose weight, get more toned and fit, or just be more healthy in general is to be consistent. You will see more benefit if you work out 15-30 minutes a day for 30 days than if you worked out for 2 hours for 2 days. That’s just the truth of it so whatever you need to do to stay focused and on track, do it. Don’t give up! I saw this quote on Pinterest and it was “I’m giving up on giving up.” I really like it and it’s something I tell myself when I want to quit halfway through my workout because I’m tired or discouraged. It works for me!
  11. Remember – You ARE Enough & You Deserve This. Last of all, but not least, remember that you are enough and you DO deserve this! I know it sounds like a fitness commercial or something, but seriously, you ARE enough. Love yourself right now. Tell yourself that you are enough and make peace. It does not serve you in any way to hate yourself or put yourself down in life – all it does is make life harder to deal with and burn out your happiness. You can totally do anything you put your mind to and you deserve all the best in life so don’t be afraid to try your best and seek it out – it’s totally worth it. I know, I sound like the “because you’re worth it too!” commercial, but it’s the truth so there!

I hope this was helpful and wish you a great, rejuvenating weekend!

If you have any questions regarding any of this, feel free to leave me a comment and I’ll do my best to help you out. If you prefer it to be private, you can also email me at StorybookApothecary@gmail.com.

Have a Lovely Weekend!

<3

It seems that, in the blogging world, especially where beauty and fashion are concerned, everyone is chiming in with their thoughts on bloggers, blogger integrity and honesty, and of course, working with brands and companies. I’ve heard so much on this topic and a lot is fascinating and eye opening, some is annoying, and some is spot-on so I thought I’d chime in my thoughts on this tender topic as well.

Honesty & Passion

First off, I just want to say, and I think I’m not alone here, I started blogging because I love it and for no other reason. It’s true that I wanted to promote my skincare line that I sell on Etsy, but honestly, I realized about 3 minutes in that I love blogging about beauty more than I love creating it. It’s certainly harder to do than it looks. Also, I love to write and I love to share stories, products, experiences, and tips with people around the world. I love connecting with people who are different from me in order to share what we know and make the world a better place. I truly believe in that. I love doing product reviews, tips, DIY, and all that pertains to it because I find it fun. I love the world of health, beauty and fitness because these are things I’m passionate about and that I can share with others.

I want to make it known that I have no sponsorships, partnerships or paid anything on this blog as of this moment and that’s fine by me. As I said, I didn’t start this blog for payment. That being said, if the right person approached me, I’m not entirely opposed to it. After all, who doesn’t want to get paid to do what they love? I think we can all agree that everyone wants that, but I personally want it on my own terms and those include not having to give up my honesty, integrity, and dignity in the process.

Lastly, before I go into tirades upon tirades about what I dislike, I just want to say I’ve worked with some amazing brands and companies alike. For every bad experience I’ve had working with a brand or company, I’ve had 5-10 great ones working with others. Some of my favorites include, but are not limited to - Naruko, Beauty Habit, Suti Skincare, Alpha-H, Living Nature, Karen Murrell, and Rainwater Botanicals.

Partnerships & Sponsorships

I think, for some bloggers, sponsorships and partnerships are an exciting prospect and, with the right company, perhaps they can really become something great, but for me personally, it would certainly have to be a company/brand that I really believe and trust in. Because, if it isn’t, I really want to avoid this one at all costs. I just feel that, as a blogger, I’d be giving up too much. I’d be giving up a whole lot of my own opinions and control over my own blog if I accepted this sort of agreement. A lot of times, this agreement includes a lot of benefits for the brands, little benefit for the bloggers and a lot less for ultimate readers, but that’s just my opinion.

Paid Blog Posts

One bad experience ruined this one for me. Recently, I was approached by a company (shall remain unnamed, but if you saw it, then you know) who wanted me to do a paid post. I took around a month deciding and then ultimately decided, yes, because I thought their site was in line with products I like and natural health which is something I enjoy promoting. I posted on their site and clearly stated it was sponsored. It was all downhill from there. They requested I take all notes of sponsorship off my post, claiming it would interfere with their SEO. While what I know about SEO is pretty minimal, I will say that even I know this is not true. Needless to say, I was obviously unwilling to remove wherein I stated the post was sponsored because I’m not willing to lie to readers about it and it’s a bad sign, in my opinion, if a brand wants you to or asks you to. If a brand or company is a reputable one, then I don’t think it should matter if it’s sponsored or not or if it’s stated as such. I think readers can denote for themselves whether a blogger or their post is authentic or not and whether the brand / company itself is as well. That being said, I really highly doubt there will be any paid posts on here in the future.

Guest Posts

I love guest posts from bloggers that I know and follow. Truly. I’ve gotten to know some really incredible bloggers by trading posts and sharing ideas. I really love it. What I don’t love is being emailed by companies asking to guest post on my site for free. Not that I demand compensation, but at the same time, why should they be able to moonlight on my blog for no reason at all? Personally, I wouldn’t allow it even if they offered payment because 1.) a lot of these sites have nothing to do with my blog topics anyway, 2.) I feel like guest posts from high traffic sites are their way of short changing bloggers and taking advantage of their readerships and 3.) there is just something not right about it.

There is just something totally false about letting a company guest post on your blog so that they can link back to their website and it just annoys the hell out of me because they always act like it’s some kind of “win-win” situation when they are the only party that gets something out of it. Sadly, they will try to convince you that you’re “freeing up your time and schedule” or something. In my honest opinion, this is a company or brand’s way of saying they don’t want to pay you so they pay their in-house staff to approach blogs in a ‘friendly’ manner and ask if they accept guest posts, as though they are just a peer blogger. I really despise the whole idea of this; it short changes bloggers everywhere and it gives good companies a bad name because of the ones that try to take advantage.

Product Reviews

Anyone who reads my blog knows that I do frequent product reviews. I get sent a lot of products for review, but I also buy my own products. Either way, my opinion is always honest. I know some people may not agree with that because they think free product will somehow guilt a blogger into always churning out a positive review, but I disagree with this. I don’t think bloggers are so easily coerced into writing crap reviews simply for some free goods. Don’t get me wrong, I love free product (seriously, who doesn’t?). It is one of the perks of being a beauty blogger that I get sent cool stuff to try and feature on my blog, but it doesn’t alter my opinion. I’ve done many reviews and they’re not all positive, however I received them. I always make sure to note how I received a product (whether I purchased it or if it was sent to me) and I test said product(s) as needed, but I do try to allot at least a month to do a thorough and creative testing. I hope this shows through in my review posts because it’s something I’ve tried very hard to maintain on this blog.

So, those are my thoughts on blogging and all the madness and I hope you won’t hate me for it. Instead, I hope you enlighten me with what I don’t know, encourage me to do better, learn from me a little, and I’ll gladly do the same.

Please also check out Hua Jing Li’s post on this topic – here or you can read more about fashion v. beauty bloggers according to Sara Zucker (which originally spurned my interest in posting on this topic) here.

Both further inspired me to post my thoughts on this topic and have made great points on the subject as well.

What are your thoughts on blogging, companies / brands, sponsorship and the like?

Hello!

So, I recently noticed a huge drop in my followers and I am wondering if it’s either 1) a glitch in the system or 2) I am doing something horribly wrong to offend my readers.

Can you guys please give me some feedback and/or advice to this end?

I’m kind of confused about it and I don’t really know how to respond so any advice you can offer if I am offending or pissing you guys off, please let me know!

I work really hard as a blogger and I just want to know what I can do to change, improve or better myself and make the blog better for you.

I appreciate any help you can offer me.

Thank you

My Massive Guide to Achieving Clear, Acne Free Skin

I get a lot of questions asking what products are good for keeping skin clear, getting rid of acne, and all that jazz so I thought I would do a post on it (of course). If you simply want a guide on how to get rid of blemishes, blackheads and all that, check out this post I did awhile back. This post is more or less about general tips and guidelines to keeping your skin clear or clearing your skin up in general. Anyhow, on with the post!

Some Background on my Skin: My skin is like a woman on her menstrual whose chocolate has been stolen, hidden or eaten; cranky, temperamental and extremely short tempered. Acne sucks and I’m someone who knows first hand how crappy it can be to struggle with getting and maintaining clear skin, but there is a way to keep your skin under control and looking great with these few tips that are easier than you think to do. I’m not a celebrity with an on-call derm or someone with bucket loads of cash to spend on every product that may or may not work; I’m just a girl who has found the light through the ugly darkness that is acne prone, sensitive combination to oily skin and discovered tips that have worked well for me along the way and some that I swear by. I hope they work for you as well. I’m here if you have any questions so feel free to comment below if you have any!

Double Cleansing Is God.

Straight out of the gate, I swear by double cleansing. The trick to this, in my opinion, is using the right cleansers. A lot of the time, I see people who have bad acne or breakouts, but then they use super drying cleansers as well which can irritate the skin further and aggravate break outs so they worse or take longer to calm down and heal up. When my acne was at its worst, I was no different. I used those horrid Neutrogena acne soaps that are basically just sulfates (creates the foamy lather and dries out your skin) with salicylic acid and so it’s actually no wonder my skin was a dry, red, acne ridden mess.

What I like to use for double cleansing depends on the day. If I am particularly oily or dirty, I like to use a clay based cleanser like the Tea Tree Clay Cleanser from Naruko followed by something more nourishing like the Cleanse Balm from Suti to counterbalance dryness. You can also take the opposite approach and oil cleanse first with an oil like this Olive Oil All-In-One Treatment from ONE Skincare and then use a gentle cleanser afterwards like the Fresh Soy Face Cleanser (all time favorite of mine!) or the Vitalising Cleanser from Living Nature. You can also oil cleanse the cheap way by using a raw organic oil such as olive oil, evening primrose, or grapeseed oil. Check out this post to see which is right for your skin type.

If I am battling breakouts and irritation galore, I prefer to use the Triple Action Cleanser with aloe vera from Alpha-H followed by their Micro Cleanse scrub to really get a good clean and help with cell turnover. If you do use this method, though, you don’t need to exfoliate after as the scrub will be enough, but you can use a mask if you like for added cleansing. Just make sure you moisturize after or you’ll be too dry and cause more irritation. Otherwise, if I’m having a normal day or if I feel a little dry or sensitive, I might just use the Cleanse Balm or a Cleansing Oil (try the Natural Glow Cleansing Oil from Antonia Burrell)  followed by a gentle soap free cleanser (try the Organic Face Wash from Juice Beauty). If I want to be lazy and do some easy cleansing that is still effective, I like to use the Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish with the muslin cloth because I can get all my makeup, sunscreen, dirt and debris off my face which clears my pores, but also get a gentle exfoliation without having to do too many steps. If your skin is deathly sensitive and you can’t use too much on it, I highly recommend investing in a konjac sponge. It’s super gentle, basic, and lightly exfoliates the skin while you use it. Plus, you can’t beat that price.

If you use a facial cleansing oil, I recommend using any of these face massage methods for excellent skin cleansing benefits. Not only does it help clear pores, it also helps your skin absorb products better so you can get the benefits from what you’re putting on your skin.

Tea Tree Oil - Best Sellers

Spot Treat As Opposed to All Over Treat.

In the past when I would breakout, especially in high school, I would normally attack breakouts with benzoyl peroxide and these cringe-worthy acne pads from Oxy that burned like hell going on ( I now know it’s because they have almost 50% alcohol) and only succeeded in drying my whole face out, making me peel, more red, more irritated and had little to no effect on blemishes. Please don’t do what I did and learn from my heinous heinous mistakes! I now use tea tree oil to spot treat with a Q tip or otherwise I put a bit of mask on each of my blemishes so I can calm the redness, soreness and make them shrink quickly.

Exfoliate Like A Boss.

When I say “Like a Boss,” I do NOT mean roughly. Please be gentle with your skin! It’s a delicate mantle that needs attention and affection. I just mean that you shouldn’t slack on your weekly, bi-weekly or even tri-weekly exfoliation sessions. Most people only need once or twice a week, but if you have really oily or super clogged skin, you may need to do 3 times a week to get your skin under control. Once it’s calmed down a bit, you can take it back to 2 time or even once a week, depending on your skin’s condition, type and the season.

Also, a lot of people think that to exfoliate, you have to use a scrub, but this isn’t true at all. Exfoliation can be easy and gentle and even those with sensitive skin can do it, but you just need to use the right product or ingredient. If you have super sensitive, dry or combination to dry skin, I recommend using a thin layer of milk, yogurt or these Nourishing Facial Refreshers from Dairyface which work really well. They might make you a little red post exfoliation, but it fades within 20 minutes and the effects are worth it. If you have normal, combination to oily, oily or skin that’s broken out, you can use either a scrub like the Micro Cleanse from Alpha-H, a personal favorite, or you can use an exfoliant like this Papaya and Willow Bark Enzyme Exfoliator from Claribel Skincare that requires less work. You just apply a thin layer, wait 10 minutes and rinse. It will feel tingly, but it goes away shortly. Be careful to not overdo it.

If you’re unsure about how many times a week you should be exfoliating, start with 1 time and then work up to more if needed and no more than 3 times. If you really need the pick me up, you can use a mask directly after exfoliating for added effectiveness. ALWAYS moisturize after exfoliating, using a mask and/or cleansing no matter what. I don’t care if your skin is oily, dry, or whatever, find a moisturizer you like and use it every day twice a day. It’s optimal if you can add in some kind of nighttime treatment serum or cream for additional repair benefits, but if not, a basic gentle moisturizer with hydrating ingredients should work fine.

Mask It, But Not with Makeup!

I am pretty obsessed with using face masks. I love to make them (see Natural DIY Face Mask recipes here), use them, whatever. Pretty much any way I can enjoy the fun of using one, I will. Plus, if you prefer to avoid intense exfoliation or you don’t want to put in that much effort, a mask is a fail safe way to get the job done without thinking too hard about it. Some of my favorite face masks are the Rosehip and Mint Clay Mask from Farmaesthetics, Willa Naturals Cucumber Clay Mask, or sometimes I just leave the Micro Cleanse from Alpha-H on for 5 minutes after I’m done massaging it around my face.

Dry Skin Is Not Necessarily Acne Free Skin. Moisturize!

Again, a lot of people think if they can just dry out the whole area where acne is residing, this will make their skin clear. For instance, I used to use benzoyl peroxide or any acne gel I had on hand on my entire face. I did have a lot of breakouts, but rather than deal with them one by one, I just slathered it all over my face. Not only was my face dry, irritated and still broken out, it was also now peeling. Yay. Like I said, don’t make the same desperate mistakes as me! Even if you have breakouts, don’t be afraid to use oil serums on your face (See here for the truth about oil in skincare) because a lot of them actually help with breakouts and irritation on the skin like the Elemeni Face Oil from Max Green Alchemy that helps to balance the skin while treating breakouts. Another more nourishing option is the Radiance Face Oil from Living Nature. If you absolutely can’t bring yourself to use oil on your face ( like my mom), the Balancing Moisturizer and Gentle Face Exfoliant from Alpha-H is in my holy grail of products and works really well. It has 10% glycolic acid in the formula so it exfoliates the skin as well. If you use it, you don’t need to exfoliate. It would likely be overkill. Also, sometimes I like to use it every other day so it just depends on your skin. If that seems to intense, another great option is the Extra Hydrating Toning Gel by Living Nature. If you need extra moisture and nourishment on your skin or if your skin is feeling especially red and irritated, the Purity Balm from Suti Skincare is amazing.

Stop Touching Your Face.

Seriously, I mean it. It was one of the hardest things I had to get over and I still catch myself picking sometimes, but you just have to do whatever you can to NOT touch your face. I have a tendency to lean my hand on my chin sometimes as well and that oil, dirt and debris on my hand and fingers would cause breakouts. Do whatever you have to do to not touch your face; it will thank you for it later by staying clear and smooth.

Keep Hair Products Off Your Face.

I’ve had issues in the past with heavy conditioners breaking my forehead out so this is just a heads up as some people may not think about the fact that it might be their hair products breaking them out. Just keep all hair serums, conditioners, moisturizing shampoos, etc. away from your face and be sure to wash your hands directly after applying anything to your hair. I’ve gone and applied hair serum and then caught myself touching my face in some way or another a few seconds later without thinking about it.

Use Acne Friendly Makeup, Preferably the Natural Kind.

I know a lot of people use makeup to cover up breakouts. I was no different. That’s why I created the Fairest of Them All Healing Face Powder because I wanted a powder that would help heal acne while I wore it without drying my skin out like some of the treatments that include sulfur and which tend to make me peel. Avoid liquid foundation, if you can, at least until your breakouts get more under control. If you just can’t avoid it, I recommend investing in a formula that include salicylic acid like this one from SukiColor.

Clean Your Pillows, Sheets, and Wash Cloths Frequently.

This one is something I never thought about until I read it in a blog post. I would source it if I could remember where the hell I read it, but nope. Anyhow, you want to clean AT LEAST your pillowcase once a week, your sheets every 2 weeks, and do not use the same wash cloth more than twice. I bought a small pack of washcloths at Target for like $6 USD. You can also get an organic cotton set of 8 for $11.99 on Etsy here. Otherwise, some people swear by muslin cloths. It’s your personal preference so use what you like, just make sure it’s clean. Lastly, don’t use the same washcloth you cleaned the counter top with on your face. I’ll never forget the day I realized I was doing this. My friend Aaron noticed I was cleaning sink water off my counter with the cloth. I then proceeded to wash my face and was right about to dry my face with that same cloth when he asked me what the heck I was doing. Hello! You just wiped the counter with that! Do NOT put that on your face. So now I’m passing on that advice. DO NOT PUT THAT ON YOUR FACE!

Sleep With Your Hair Up, Geisha Style.

Sometimes, especially in the Summer, my hair gets oily a whole lot faster. I have long hair at the moment and it can get dry as well so I use conditioner a lot. If I sleep with my hair down, I tend to end up sleeping on it and this can cause breakouts, either because your hair is too oily or the conditioner you use is. To solve this problem, I often sleep with a top bun like this one or braid my hair to keep it out of my face.

Stay Hydrated with Fruits + Veggies.

This is pretty basic, but in the beginning I know I never thought about mind / body connection. Actually that’s something I recently truly thought about after reading The Water Secret by Dr. Howard Murad (of Murad Skincare). I know a lot of blogs will advise you to drink a million and five cups of water a day and you should be drinking a good amount of water, but a lot of your body’s hydration (including that of your skin) gets hydrated by food as well, especially vegetables and fruits like watermelon and celery which are made up of mostly water. Plus, the added bonus is they also include vital nutrients and antioxidants to protect your body, skin and rejuvenate and heal it as well. For a list of the most hydrating foods, click here.

Workout To Unclog Pores.

Lastly, a good sweat can help clear out pores. Whenever you get your blood pumping, your cells are moving faster and your metabolism kicks in to high gear which helps with cell turnover and healing rates in your body, including in your skin. I used to dread working out when I was broken out because I felt like all the sweat caused my pores to clog, but actually exercise will help clear your skin. Just make sure to wipe your face with a washcloth instead of your inevitable dirty hands and shower and clean your face directly after working out.

So that’s it; my massive painfully long list of tips.

Sorry for the ridiculous length and the huge amount of links; I just wanted everything accessible and easy to find so yeah.

I hope you found it helpful anyway and maybe you can incorporate some of these tips into your daily routine.

Good Luck & Feel free to ask me questions in the comments!

The Recipe for Success (Not What You Think It Is)

Reblogged from healthd:

You will fail. Let's just get that out of the way.

If you try, somewhere along the line, you are gonna fail. You may be doing great on your journey to weight loss and fitness, but, sooner or later you'll find yourself in the middle of a decadent raspberry cheesecake - whether proverbially or literally.

And that's ok. Why?

Because…
