Sugar Skull Dia de Los Muertos / Halloween Makeup Look

Last night, I was experimenting with even more Halloween makeup looks and, of course, I had to try out the sugar skull makeup look for myself! It’s not all that difficult to pull off, to be honest – MUCH easier than the skeleton makeup look I did last weekend!

The only thing about this sugar skull makeup look is that the little details take time and imagination. The face decorations are really up to you. Some people do spider webs, others do diamonds and spades, and then others do simple swirl designs like the ones I did.

Many people use a variety of different colors to achieve the sugar skull look. The most traditional colors are black  for the eye, nose and lip shadows and the stitch work and then a mixture of orange and purple for the flowers and designs. This is because marigold flowers are the unofficial but official flowers of Dia de Los Muertos which are orange. I’m not sure where the purple comes from, but they look lovely together. Other sugar skull designs I’ve seen include all purple, all pink, greens, reds, and any mixture of them.

For my sugar skull makeup look, I decided to go with deep purple and teal aqua colors. I only used black to line my eyes and outline my nose. For everything else, I used a mixture of deep purple cream shadow and aqua blues and teal colors. For the floral petals around my eyes, I used Maybelline Color Tattoo cream shadow in Tenacious Teal with some shimmer teal eye shadow I had on hand. To contour my eyes and nose, do the face designs, and do the stitch work, I used a deep purple color. To contour my cheeks, I used a mixture of both deep purple and teal with a tiny bit of black.

And that’s it! This look was way easier than the straight up skeleton makeup which was a lot more on the realistic side, structurally, and therefore more difficult to achieve than this. Personally, I like them both equally, but this one is a lot more fun and you can play around with more colors so the look is more bright and pretty.

To complete this look, you can add roses of any color to your hair, wear a flower headband ( which is traditional orange marigolds), or just curl your hair and put on a nice dress and you’re good to go!
