5 Ways to Stay Healthy During the Holidays
It can be so difficult to stay healthy during the holiday season. Since I tend to get quite stressed out, there are a few things I do when I feel myself getting overwhelmed. I thought I’d share with you guys in case you struggle with holiday stress during the busiest time of the year!
Once the holidays hit, it’s easy to let your healthy eating plan go out the door, but you may want to rethink that habit! Eating well can help soothe stress and anxiety, improve your sleep, and help give you energy. On the contrary, if you eat too much sugar and processed foods, it can make you feel sluggish, tired, anxious, and even give you mood swings. While I understand that eating holiday foods is part of the holiday season, try adding in some healthy greens, vitamin-rich fruits and seasonal vegetables, and drinking enough water to help fuel your day and feel your best.
With all that there is to do during the holidays, I totally understand letting exercise fall by the wayside. My advice is to keep things simple. If you don’t have time to do an hour workout anymore, then fit in a quick 30 minute run in the morning. If that seems too much for you, then do a simple 15 minute yoga or weight routine. Every little bit will make a difference. Even taking a walk in the morning or after dinner can help give you a boost of energy, improve your sleep quality, and help digest foods and soothe stress.
Get Enough Sleep.
Getting enough sleep is one of THE MOST important strategies on this list! Make sure you get to bed early enough to get at least 7-9 hours of nightly sleep. The holidays tend to stress me out quite a bit so I’ve been testing out the youtheory® Sleep Nighttime Powder from Costco.com for a bit of help in the sleep department. Sleep Nighttime Powder is rich in calming minerals such as natural melatonin and magnesium which help soothe anxiety, stress, and improve sleep quality. A little bit in your nightly tea or a glass of water helps me drift off fairly quickly! Sleep is so important for your health and immunity because your body NEEDS that time to repair. Lack of sleep and fatigue can lead to over eating, sugar cravings, mood swings, anxiety, and more so it’s paramount you find a way to catch those ZzZz’s!
If you’re like me, you may have trouble turning your brain off long enough to get that much-needed shut eye. In order to combat my overly active brain, I make sure to take time to unwind at the end of a long day. I watch a few episodes of my favorite shows, then I put my phone away and read a chapter of a book. Make sure you give yourself time to chill out, away from the blue light of technology (which upsets circadian sleep rhythms), and simply relax. If you don’t enjoy reading, you can take time to fill out a gratitude journal, jot down thoughts from your day, zen out with a soothing face mask, or make a to-do list for the following day. Simple things can help you wind down and simply be.
Have Some Fun!
Of course, the holidays must include some fun, right? Make sure you’re not so caught up in the rush of the holiday season that you don’t stop to actually enjoy the present moment. Sit down and enjoy a movie with your friends and family, Go outdoors for a winter hike or stroll through the neighborhoods to see the holiday decor and lights. Talk with friends on your balcony with some tea or coffee. Enjoy the season and let off some steam. It can make such a big difference for your mental health and happiness.
