Root Science Natural Superfood Skincare Review

Root Science Natural Superfood Skincare Review

I’m so excited to be starting off this year and featuring new green beauty brands and Root Science, in particular, is one that I’m really excited about because the products are really lovely, the packaging is sleek, chic and simple, and the natural formulas are not only unique, but also effective.

About the Brand

Root Science was founded by Icelandic Gigja who came to the USA with her family at age 8. Growing up, she and her sister both experienced extremely sensitive skin and many issues due to this. After years of using OTC and prescription treatments with little to no results, she turned to nature for the answers and began Root Science with a quest to provide naturally formulated products with complete transparency and total effectiveness.

An ingredient-focused skincare company, Root Science formulates skincare products with natural, organic, nutrient-dense, super food ingredients that are chosen based on their efficacy for healing and potency properties. With an eye set on results, their motto is “real ingredients, real results” and their product formulas reflect that using organic plant oils, potent antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals.

They handcraft their products in small batches to maintain freshness, quality, and potency of ingredients. They use ingredients that start as a root and are 100% organic in their products; hence, the name Root Science. Aside from that, they never use water in their product formulas to extend the shelf life, prevent the growth of bacteria, and also maintain the potency of ingredients as water often dilutes effectiveness.

Reasons to Love Root Science:

  • Naturally Sourced
  • Certified Organic
  • Cruelty Free and Vegan
  • Made With Potent Plant Ingredient and NO WATER (longer shelf life, no bacteria growth, and undiluted ingredients)
  • Ingredients “From the Earth, Not A Test Tube”

I am so grateful that Root Science sent me a few samples of their lovingly handcrafted skincare products which I have been trialing these past few months, playing around with (literally – see below), and enjoying.

Root Science Products I Love

Pure Balance Face Serum

This simple face serum is meant to help balance, calm, and soothe normal/combination skin types who deal with imbalance (overly oily skin), redness, irritation, and inflammation. The formula utilizes organic plant oils such as jojoba, grape seed, camellia, cranberry, and pomegranate as well as a proprietary blend of essential oils, non-GMO vitamin E, and Sea Buckthorn CO2 extract to help balance, soothe, hydrate and soften skin. The EO’s are non-photosensitizing so you can safely use this serum both AM and PM for optimal results. I really love this serum because it’s truly balancing! If you have acne prone or oily skin, this is a great serum to try out. It smells lovely, you only need a small amount to get the benefits, and it’s balancing – not drying – which I think a lot of brands tend to get wrong when it comes to serums for acne prone / imbalanced skin.

Rs REBORN Face Mask

A botanical powder blend of Rhassoul clay, activated charcoal, licorice, lavender, hibiscus, and turmeric can be mixed with a small amount of water to create a face mask designed to help encourage collagen production, cell turnover, even skin tone and discoloration, soften and condition, absorb oils and lend a beautiful glow to skin. To use, mix 1 teaspoon of this powder with a little water to form a paste. Apply to skin and leave on 15-20 minutes or until dry. Then, rinse with warm water. This is a lovely face mask for treating dullness! I really think it gives a nice glow to skin after using it and it’s super gentle on skin, with a very subtle almost minty scent to it. I definitely think more mature or dry skin will benefit from this one as it’s very gentle, almost soothing, but you do see a brightening effect after using it and your skin will look clean and clear which I love!

Rs DETOX Face Mask

A clarifying botanical powder blend meant for oily, acne prone, and troubled combination skin types, this face mask includes French green clay, bentonite clay, kaolin clay, calendula, chamomile, neem, gotu kola, marshmallow root, and a blend of essential oils. This mask works to give your skin a serious deep clean and target skin issues such as hormonal and/or cystic acne, toxins, excess oil, unclog pores, and also calm and sooth redness and irritation. To use, mix 1 teaspoon of this powder with a little water to form a paste. Apply to skin and leave on 15-20 minutes or until dry. Then, rinse with warm water. This is a great mask for clogged skin. Some days, I feel like I wake up and my skin just looks and feels super dirty. On those days, this mask works wonders! I don’t know if it can dethrone my favorite Problem Solver Mask, but it certainly comes close and it’s a lot less intense of an experience so if you don’t like tingling/warming masks, but you still want the results that come from those; this is a great alternative and works well!

Rs Beauty Bar Face Soap

A gentle cleansing soap bar, this bar cleanser is super gentle, 100% active, and totally waterless for a cleanse that’s gentle on the most sensitive skin types, but tough enough to remove dirt, debris, toxins, and makeup. This is a gentle facial cleansing bar soap, just as claimed, and I really like the scent of it! It’s not drying at all, but it is balancing so it might not be suitable for really dry skin types, but everyone else should be fine. I really like the simplicity of cleansing with a soap bar and while it doesn’t replace my favorite cleansing balm or cleansing oil, it’s a great option when I don’t want to spend the time to massage my face and I just want to cleanse and go.

Rs Face Scrub

If you love face scrubs, but you want something that’s seriously gentle on skin, this is a great option! It’s formulated in a powder that you mix with water and includes ingredients like almond meal, spearmint, kaolin, arrowroot, orange peel, and neem so it exfoliates skin with very fine grains. It’s definitely not a harsh scrub at all. It feels almost like you’re washing your face with clay; that’s how soft and gentle it is. At the same time, it does feel like it’s detoxing skin and cleaning out your pores and it definitely leaves skin looking a little brighter than before.

What Sets Root Science Apart

One thing I really love about Root Science is that they have a sleek, elegant, but simple look to their packaging that’s almost unisex and I think that’s awesome because so many green beauty brands seem to be specifically marketed toward women which is great, but I think men will appreciate this line a little more just for it’s “no frills” design. Aside from aesthetics, I love the all natural, yet science-backed super food ingrediens and I love that they actually work! The products are effective, gentle, subtly scented by their plant ingredients though not overwhelming, and really just feel classy to use. Aside from that, I had a lot of fun using their face masks. Just look at all the fun I had around Halloween last year 😛
