Inspired by the Red My Lips Campaign, lovely Maryna of MAHALO decided to create a stunning organic lip tint, complete with a natural plumping infusion to help empower the lives of others. Hoping to raise awareness about sexual violence and speak out against victim blaming, Maryna made a lip color that’s as bold and beautiful as you are. It really touched me when she first wrote to me about the creation of this lip tint because I could just feel how much the cause means to her, even via email.

As someone who’s experienced assault and powerlessness personally, I find this particularly moving because I know I’m not alone in the experience.

In fact, it’s a shockingly common experience. If you haven’t personally experienced sexual assault, you might have felt powerless or victimized at one point in your life and that can be just as damaging to someone, in my opinion.

I really love the message behind this particular item because the lip tint supports the Red My Lips Campaign which happens the entire month of April and a large portion of proceeds (20%, to be exact!) from these limited edition lip tints go to RedMyLips.org.

These gorgeous lip tints also promote something that I think we can all do with a little more of and that’s reclaiming our power. I can’t tell you how many times in my life that I felt literally powerless. I felt immobile with the feeling of helplessness and it wasn’t until I realized that nobody could take my power without me giving it up to them, that I finally felt a shift in my perspective and began to reclaim my own power.

Growing up, I often felt like I owed it to the world to be beautiful. I actually felt like I was letting everyone down if I wasn’t the prettiest, smartest girl in the room wherever I went. It’s ridiculous, looking back on it now, but I know I’m not alone in this. As women (and likely men, too), we stake a lot in our appearance and the societal pressure of these values is perpetuated by parents, family and even friends.

It’s especially difficult for women because , often times, we’re told that this is the most important thing (or the only thing) that determines our worth.

We should be beautiful and marry a rich man. Be beautiful to get a good job, be admired, and stay young forever. It’s so unrealistic to think that beauty is the only value you have in life. I’m sure many people put a lot of stock in it so it’s imperative to remember that your beauty is YOURS. It belongs to you. It’s not for anyone else and it’s so important to realize that your beauty can be anything you want it to be. This can be in your eyes, your smile, or your humor. It can be in the words that you write, the songs you sing, or the art you create. The point is that you decide what it is; nobody else has that power but you.

In American culture, sexuality is incredibly taboo, thanks to our Puritan roots. It’s no wonder that many of us have developed a discomfort when it comes to expressing our own sexuality. In the media, both men and women are constantly sexualized to sell products. And yet, when expressing our sexuality in life, we’re called sluts or shamed in some way. If we don’t want to be sexy, objectified, or slut-shamed, we must pretend to be naive A-sexual nuns with no predilection for anything pleasurable. It’s absolutely insane, but just as your beauty belongs to you, so too does your sexuality. It’s whatever you want to it be; express it however you like.

At the end of the day, NO ONE can take your power from you unless you relinquish it to them. Your power is your own and nobody has more say in your life than you. You may not be able to control the actions of others, but you can live by example and ensure your own actions are aligned with your values. That’s one of the things I love so much about the Red My Lips campaign. You don’t need to experience sexual violence to red your lips and show solidarity for those who have. You simply need to align your values and stand among us. There’s nothing more moving and empowering than all of us standing together in support for a better future without shame, blame, or guilt.
