The Most Popular Halloween Costumes for 2015

Traditional witches, witches from popular stories, and crazy spins on all your favorites from Hocus Pocus to more fantastical ones.

Zombies are big again this year. With TV shows like The Walking Dead and iZombie, it’s really no wonder they’ve become popular in the mainstream and tons of variations from hyper-realistic zombies to cartoon pop art versions.

Star Wars Characters

Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Yoda, etc. – With the Star Wars reboot coming out at the end of this year, it’s no wonder we’ve seen a huge spike in the amount of Star Wars merchandise, Star Wars costumes, and all that jazz. Who doesn’t love the classic Star Wars films and even the prequels (maybe not so much LOL) ?

Yes, I mean literally. Cats, dogs, mice, horses, wolves, and more. They’re all really popular this year!

Harley Quinn

Harley Quinn is, arguably, the most popular Halloween costume for women this year, especially with Suicide Squad coming out soon. Also, there are so many different styles for this costume inspired by the comic book, the cartoon, the many video game renditions, and now Suicide Squad’s latest take on Harley Quinn that everyone can create a costume that’s fun and unique.

Tons of Game of Thrones characters have been popular costume choices for years since the show first came out, but Khaleesi is one Halloween costume that always seems to come out on top.

Comic Book Heroes

Thor, Batman, Iron Man, Catwoman, Black Widow, Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Etc. – Comic book movie adaptations and reboots means there have been more comic book Halloween costumes in recent years than ever before. The heroes always have a huge place when it comes to kids, but now even adults are joining in the fun.

Cops, Robbers, Etc.

Whether you go for something historical like Bonnie and Clyde, current picks like Orange is the New Black, or more general cops, robbers, and the like, these costumes are still going strong. They seem to be pretty consistent with costume ideas, for reasons I’ll never understand.

Cute Animals

Cute animals have typically been popular costume choices for babies for Halloween, but these days, even girls and young women are taking up the mantle of cute animal costumes. Anything from cute kitty cat costumes to deers, bears, mouse, dogs, and more.

Doctors and Nurses

Medical is popular this year with doctors, nurses, and all variations of them this year. From the standard costume to gory, zombie, ghost, vampire, or just plain old dead versions as well.

Comic Book Villains

The Joker, Riddler, Bane, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, Etc. – Although the comic book heroes are expected to be popular costume options, it’s a little surprising that now comic book villains are becoming increasingly popular as well.

Do pirates every stop being popular? I feel like this one never goes out of style. Pirates have a certain adventurous feel and pizazz to them and as long as Jack Sparrow keeps making films, I’m pretty sure they’re here to stay!

Dr. Seuss Characters

Cat in the Hat, Thing 1 & 2, Etc. – I don’t really get the weird appeal of this, but I guess Dr. Seuss characters are seeing a bit of a spike in the costume department, mainly Cat in the Hat, and also Thing 1 and Thing 2 among others.

Breaking Bad Characters

It’s no surprise that Breaking Bad characters and people dressing up like “meth chemists” has been popular the past few years. The show was a huge hit and since it’s ended, costumes have been really big.

Slasher Movie Characters

Think Halloween’s Mike Myers, the masked murderer from Scream, and Freddy Krueger; they’re all having a moment this year!

Disney Characters

Especially Elsa, Anna, and Ariel – Disney character costumes of all sorts have never stopped being popular, I’m sure, and Frozen characters are still going strong this year along with variations of Ariel, Cinderella, and others.

You know, the adorable characters from Despicable Me! Who doesn’t love minions? Well, basically everyone loves them because this comes out on top in popular costume categories for 2015 for both kids and adults!

Disney Villains

The Descendants (for kids), Maleficent, Cruella de Vil, Queen of Hearts, Ursula, etc.– With the release of the children’s Disney film, The Descendants, a film about the kids who are descendants of Disney villains, I’m sure these costumes will be huge this year among younger kids. For older teens and adults, Maleficent is still really popular alongside Cruella de Vil and Ursula who is really big on pinterest.

Cute and scary scarecrows alike are popular this year. I don’t really get it, but I think it might be cool if someone took the Scarecrow from Wizard of Oz and made that scary; that would be an awesome costume in my opinion!

Nightmare Before Christmas Characters

Sally, Jack Skellington, Oogie Boogie, etc. – Nightmare Before Christmas costumes have been huge since the film came out in the 90’s and probably never stopped being popular. The stylized characters of the film are always fun to do, especially Sally and Jack, which are always favorites.

Beetlejuice Characters

Beetlejuice, Lydia, etc. – Beetlejuice is getting a reboot VERY soon, if you didn’t know, and Michael Keaton is on board (OMG!) so it’s no wonder this cult classic is having an influx of costume frenzy these past few years.

Most Popular Era Costumes

1920’s, 1950’s, 1970’s and Victorian era – Era costumes are always popular and they can be customized and made unique by making them skeleton, ghosts, zombies, etc. Otherwise, you can go ultra-classic and keep it to just a classic era costume as well.

Day of the Dead / Dia de Los Muertos

Dia de Los Muertos is a holiday on it’s own that happens on November 2nd, but people are turning Day of the Dead looks into funky costumes of all sorts for Halloween these days. I think there are some horribly cheesy skeleton costumes you can purchase at the Halloween stores this year, but in my opinion, you’ll be better of making it yourself if this is a costume you want to achieve.

Video Game Characters

Assassin’s Creed, Pacman, Arkham Asylum, League of Legends, World of Warcraft, and tons more! -With the ever-growing popularity of cosplay, video game character costumes are becoming more and more mainstream and popular. With crazy realistic graphics and intricate characters and stories in video games, it’s no wonder people are turning to them for Halloween inspiration.

Greek Goddess, Cleopatra, etc.

These costumes are classics, but they never seem to go out of style so I thought they were worth mentioning on this roundup!

vampire diaries makeup

Vampires, Werewolves, and Ghosts

Again, these are all classics, but there are so many different varieties out there these days that you can look completely different from anyone else. People on pinterest, youtube, and cosplayers these days are so, so creative with their looks that you can get inspiration from a million different places online and create something totally cool and unique even if you’re just a ghost or vampire, etc.

I like both scary and cute, I guess, but not gross-blood-or-flesh-oozing-all-over types. A friend of mine once dressed up as Malfoy from Harry Potter for a party and said a lot of women hit on him!

Definitely! It’s tons of fun and you really don’t even need a crazy costume, if you prefer to DIY. You can wear a lace dress, heels, and a floral crown and just make your day of the dead makeup be the star of your costume 🙂 Hope you have a great Halloween and thanks for visiting Beth!
