 Mungo Murphy Seaweed Beauty Review

Mungo Murphy Seaweed Company is one of those beauty brands to love not only because it’s naturally made in small batches in Connemara, Ireland, but also because the lovely founder Sinead is such a fascinating woman with such a cool back story and you know how I feel about stories…

The Story Behind Mungo Murphy

When I first contacted Sinead about trying out her products, I have to admit it was because I’d become obsessed with the name of her company. I’ve always been obsessed with all things Irish because my mom’s father’s side are from Northern Ireland. My family came over to America hundreds of years ago, but we still largely identify as (according to my mom) Dutch Irish, German and Welsh so I find anything in that vein to be riveting. I knew the products sounded awesome and unique, but the quintessentially Irish-Scottish name itself became lodged inside my brain and wouldn’t go so, eventually, I had to ask: why Mungo Murphy?

Having grown up in California, Sinead’s mother was a California girl gone rogue (sounds epic) to become an Abalone farmer in Connemara, Ireland.

The only way her mom could convince Sinead to come along when she went farming for the abalone was if she could collect the seaweed and bring it home for her baths. Clearly, she’s been doing this ages now so I consider her an all-out expert on the stuff and now that I’ve tried it: a total genius!

So, the idea and ideals for Mungo Murphy are much inspired by both her upbringing with her mom along the beaches of Connemara and her unique seaweed baths growing up. The name itself was inspired by a family she once met who’s son was called Mungo (she said she loved the unique Scottish name) and Murphy (for Ireland, obviously) and the alliteration combined became her charming seaweed company!

Seaweed Bath Bags

These are some seriously unique seaweed bath bags. They’re kind of similar in function to bath teas. The seaweed bags must be brewed in a boiling bowl of water for several minutes and then poured into a bath. The steeping of the seaweed beforehand allows all the oils and minerals to be released and then you pour those into the bath for a good soak.

The smell, I admit, is not optimal. It smells very fishy; exactly how you would expect seaweed to smell, actually. BUT – these are incredible.

If you ever want something that will seriously benefit your skin in terms of calming inflammation and skin irritations, softening and nourishing skin with sea minerals, and just generally indulging in a really unique kind of bath soak, this is the ULTIMATE luxury. The smell isn’t the best, but the benefits pay off in dividends.

Seaweed Face Mask

Seaweed face masks seem to be a theme with me lately, but I swear it’s all coincidence! This particular face mask is unique because it’s nearly all made of seaweed. There’s no clay base or anything; just the benefits of pure sea minerals. The smell is much the same as the seaweed bath, but on your face. It goes on a bit like a scrub would and doesn’t really even feel like a mask, though the effects are lovely. It has the same calming to irritation and inflammation on your face as the bath has on your body. The little particles actually offer gentle exfoliation as well and these cute little jars are so adorable that I feel like they would make adorable party gifts!
