Luxury Japanese Beauty: Tatcha Skincare Review

Luxury Japanese Beauty: Tatcha Skincare Review

Ever since reading Memoirs of a Geisha in high school, I’ve been seriously obsessed with beauty secrets of the geisha. They just seemed to be so magical, graceful, and timeless. It’s a no brainer that when Tatcha Skincare offered me some products to try out and review, I leaped at the opportunity!

Their lineup includes a ton of gorgeously packaged and naturally formulated products founded on ancient Japanese beauty rituals. Their intuitive formulas harness the secrets of Geisha as well as ancient Japanese texts that are thousands of years old. The brand is founded on the idea that less is more. Tatcha believes that beauty is simple, elegant, and timeless.

 About Tatcha Skincare

After a chance encounter with a geisha on a trip to Kyoto, Tatcha Skincare founder, Victoria Tsai was forever changed and started Tatcha. The brand is inspired by the ancient texts of the eastern world, especially an ancient Japanese text that may be one of the first beauty books ever written.

After years of suffering from acute dermatitis, she has now created a line that is just as gentle and safe as it is effective.

Not only the founder, but also the chief product developer, Victoria works with scientists, researchers and even modern-day geisha in Japan to create aesthetically beautiful, naturally effective, and luxurious product formulas. The ingredients are heavily influenced by elements of nature that have been used by geisha for centuries. Many of them include rice bran, camellia seed oil, pearl, gold, licorice, peony, silk, and of course, green tea.

The Tatcha Promise

The name TATCHA is inspired by the name—and philosophy—of the earliest form of Japanese floral arrangement called tatehana. This simple yet incredibly sophisticated art form celebrates the intrinsic beauty of a single standing flower.

In honor of this concept, Tatcha promises that:

  • Formulas will always be free of parabens, synthetic fragrances, mineral oil, sulfate detergents, phthalates, urea, DEA or TEA.
  • All are dermatologist tested, non-irritating and non-sensitizing, just as nature intended.
  • Tatcha has never, and will never, test on animals.
  • Because Tatcha believes in the power of passing wisdom down through the generations, each full-sized skincare purchase funds a day of school for an incredible girl through our partnership with Room to Read.
  • Your happiness is a priority. Tatcha offers complimentary domestic shipping, three complimentary samples with every order of full-sized products, and a happiness guarantee return policy.

What I Love

Tatcha’s website has an awesome quiz which helps you select the best products for your skin type and concerns. My skin type is acne prone/sensitive and I worry mostly about breakouts and fine lines. I was able to try one of the Ritual Discovery Kits with products specifically tailored to address my concerns. What I really love is how beautiful the packaging is. I also love that the gentleness of these products is equal to their effectiveness. A lot of times, I try out products for sensitive skin and they tend to do nothing. These products are both gentle AND effective.

They’ve clearly done a lot of research on what is efficient in helping calm, soothe, heal and brighten your skin.

The PURE One Step Camellia Cleansing Oil is both thick and light at the same time. It feels thick going on, dissolves dirt and makeup, but rinses without leaving a residue on the skin so it’s suitable for any skin type, including acne prone types like me.

The POLISHED Gentle Rice Enzyme Powder is a rice bran powder scrub that is seriously gentle! It seems like it might be abrasive or irritating when you first dispense it into your hand from the container, but once mixed with water, it becomes seriously soft and gentle on the skin. It’s a great way, in my opinion, for sensitive skin or acne prone skin types to exfoliate without irritating skin.

The RADIANT Deep Brightening Serum really does help brighten up the skin’s tone and even it out while also improving clarity. It’s softening, gentle, and light so it doesn’t feel heavy or oily on the skin at all. I love the subtle floral scent as well.

Their SUPPLE Moisture Rich Silk Cream is amazing! It is so light and fluffy, if that makes sense. It feels super light, almost gel-like, on the skin, but it’s also really hydrating so it’s perfect for dry skin types that battle acne or people who just don’t like the feeling of a heavy cream. This is the perfect solution.

Last, but not least, are the Aburatorigami Blotting Papers. These are, hands down, the best blotting papers I’ve ever tried. They’re high quality, thick, and you literally need only one sheet to blot your entire face! It’s incredible and it absorbs the oil really well without disturbing or lifting your makeup.

I love these and the packaging is so gorgeous you’ll want to pull them out midday just to show them off LOL.

While it’s true that the Tatcha Skincare line is sitting firmly in the luxury skincare category, I definitely think it’s worth the investment if you’re looking for something that’s simple, effective, and that also looks incredible sitting on your vanity or out on the bathroom counter. Also, their lineup of products is limited to a few products that have a great impact so it’s perfect if you want to keep your skincare routine simple, but efficient without using a thousand different products.

If you want to try out Tatcha products, but you are unsure where to start or which products are right for you, then you’ll want to take this skincare quiz first!

It is lovely 🙂 Their philosophy is definitely what attracted me to them in the first place. I love the idea of a brand inspired by geisha and Japanese history! And their products really live up to that ideal and work well.

they really are. I like that these are made with Japanese history and tradition in mind, but modern luxury and they work really well. The formulas are very well thought out.

I’ve been using Tatcha since last summer and absolutely adore their products. My favorites are the camellia cleanser, the classic rice enzyme powder and the beauty oil (serum), which I just repurchased last week. I rarely repurchase items because there’s always something new to try, but this line is the exception. I have dry skin and I’m often told how nice my skin is, which I attribute to Tatcha. Thanks for doing a story on it and spreading the word about this excellent line.
