5 Life Lessons We Can Learn from Lauren Bacall

If you’ve been following the news this past week, you might know that Lauren Bacall sadly passed away recently at age 89. Sad though it is, there is much we can learn from Lauren Bacall in her many quotes about living, love, and happiness and I thought I’d share a few lessons I learned from some of her brilliant words throughout her very colorful life.

“[on being called a legend] …Legends are all to do with the past and nothing to do with the present.”

Lesson: Live in the present moment.

Obviously, it’s really easy for us, as humans, to dwell on the past and analyze (or over-analyze) and maybe even obsess or regret things, but I think it’s important to keep my feet firmly planted in the present, at least, most of the time. Appreciate the good moments (and the bad ones) as they happen and be grateful for life. After all, this is your life. You don’t want to miss it.

“I figure if I have my health, can pay the rent, and have my friends, I call it ‘content.”

Lesson: Find happiness in the little things.

In this day and age, consumerism is at an all-time high and it’s no wonder with the latest technology at our fingertips. It’s easier than ever to see what the rest of the world has and what you maybe don’t have, but the truth is that there are more important things in life. Learning to be happy with less just makes all the rest of it a bit of a bonus and it’s really the people and the memories that make your life a happy one.

“Here is a test to find out whether your mission in life is complete. If you’re alive, it isn’t.”

Lesson: Always strive to do more.

I think a lot of people are afraid to try to do the things they really want to do in life, but the truth is that we are only alive until we aren’t anymore. We ought to really go out for the things we want right now because when else do we have? Life is happening right now and we should work to do the best we can at what we love and really make our lives wonderful.

” You don’t always win your battles, but it’s good to know you fought. “

Lesson: Try your best. Give it your best shot and that’s enough.

Life is made up of a mix of failure and success and really what matters most is giving it your best shot. I always feel better when I know I’ve really given something my best try and done all I can do. If I don’t succeed then, well, at least I did my best and that’s enough. The rest is really to let go and let God, I suppose.

” I think your whole life shows in your face and you should be proud of that. “

Lesson: Don’t be afraid of getting older and aging gracefully.

A lot of women, myself included, can approach aging with a kind of dread and it’s understandable. In this day and age, women are expected to either never age (fight that like a bad habit) or cease to exist when a single wrinkle appears. Media encourages and reinforces this belief and makes our insecurities at the sign of a single fine line even worse, but we get to decide how we feel about aging. After all, there is no cure to getting old and dying. It’s happening from the moment we are born into this world. All we can do is live well, decide to feel differently about it, love and accept ourselves, and stop letting the media and the opinions of others hold power over us and our appearance.
