Hourglass Cosmetics 1.5MM Mechanical Gel Eye Liner in Obsidian

I recently picked up some new Hourglass products including the Hourglass Cosmetics 1.5MM Mechanical Gel Eye Liner in Obsidian and also their Arch Brow Sculpting Pencil in Dark Brunette (review here). I’d been wanting to try out both of these for awhile now and I’m really glad I have because I honestly love both of them.

The 1.5MM Mechanical Gel Eye Liner, in particular, is really lovely because it creates such an intensely pigmented and yet thin line on the eyes. It’s such a small pencil and that makes it really simple when tight-lining the eyes. I tend to flinch quite a bit, even when I’m doing my own makeup, if I’m tight-lining my eyes. It just does not feel natural. Couple that with the fact that I’ve got seriously sensitive eyes and it’s usually a recipe for disaster! Not so with this eyeliner, though, and I’m so glad it doesn’t irritate my eyes in the slightest and despite being really pigmented, the eyeliner hardly smudges and doesn’t bleed into the lower lash line like most eyeliners do when you tight line. It lasts for hours and hours and it doesn’t sweat off, even in over 100 degree weather which is what I was in the past weekend, wearing both the gel eyeliner and the brow pencil so I can vouch for the long lasting properties of both. My only complaint is that if you’re not careful when twisting the eyeliner to get more product or if you press a little too hard, the pencil breaks off which results in wasted eyeliner, but this has only happened twice so other than that, I’m extremely happy with this product.

BENEFITS + FEATURES OF THIS GEL LINER (according to Hourglass Cosmetics):

• The precision 1.5mm tip ensures effortless control, and allows for lining in between lashes.
• The unique formula, poured into a slim mechanical component, has the malleability, intensity and staying power of a traditional gel liner. No pot, no brush, no clean-up required.
• The waterproof, transfer-proof and long-lasting formula delivers extended wear.
• Two clicks is all you need to line the eye. Each advanced mechanical pencil lasts for approximately 17 to 20 uses.
• The supple, moisturizing formula glides on smoothly and dries quickly.
• Ophthalmologist tested.

Here is my makeup using nearly all Hourglass products!

Products Used: Hourglass No. 28 Serum + Primer, Veil Fluid Foundation in Porcelain, Arch Brow Sculpt Pencil in Dark Brunette, 1.5mm Mechanical Gel Eyeliner Pencil in Obsidian, Ambient Lighting Powder in Dim Light, Dior Diorshow Extase Mascara in black, Illamasqua Cream Pigment in Hollow to Contour, and ILIA Tinted Lip Conditioner in Blossom Lady on my lips.

I really cannot recommend this eyeliner enough! It lives up to all it’s claims and then some. If you love to use eyeliner frequently, if you have sensitive eyes, if you prefer a precise line and tight line your eyes, and if you want something that will last a long time and not smudge all over – this is definitely worth a try. It works incredibly well, even on my oily eyelids.

You can get this 1.5mm mechanical gel eyeliner at Sephora as a single or in a 3 value pack.

Haven’t tried hourglass products before, love the packaging on them. I’m stoked on trying their lip products one of these days, but since I don’t wear primer, or eyeliner I’m probably not going to try that one out, lol.

the packaging is wonderful and they truly work well. I have not had a single bad experience with them and that’s saying something. I have a hard time being happy with makeup products. they also have a great foundation, setting powder (ambient lighting ones are amazing), and brow pencil!

I have never heard of this, but it looks great. I’m always looking for an eyeliner that doesn’t smudge down my eye throughout the day. So far I haven’t find one. I’d love to try this.

it’s awesome and I was shocked that it didn’t smudge at all! I have the oiliest lids on the planet – everything smudges on me even waterproof formulas. this one doesn’t. I’m sold haha

So do I! I haven’t been happy with any eyeliner really since the Maybelline Unstoppable lol. that was in High School – I am now 25. This is the first eyeliner I’ve found that doesn’t smudge on my oily lids or just crease within the first hour. This lasted me hours under professional lights ( I was filming a short film ) and even though my foundation had worn down, the eyeliner and my eyebrows still looked perfect haha.

  25. September 4, 2014 at 10:33 AM

Will for sure be checking this out

A gel eyeliner — that already sounds worth the try. I happen to love the one I already use, but if this eyeliner works better, I might have a new thing. Thanks for letting us in on this one.

I have never been one to wear eyeliner. Mainly because I don’t know how to put it on. I’ve only tried a pencil though. Liquid scares me but maybe gel would be a great middle ground.

I know the feeling. When I first started wearing it, it absolutely freaked me out. I had this fear of poking my eye out haha. I guess it just comes with practice and gel eyeliner really does make life easier because it’s creamier than pencil so it goes on with a lot less effort. That being said, you can always start out and practice with powder eye shadow and an angled eyeliner brush. This is a good way also. hope this helps!

Not yet perfected the art of eye lining so glad to know this liner does not cause irritation as I too am sensitive to what I bring to my eyes

    1. September 10, 2014 at 10:01 AM

I don’t think any of us have haha unless they’re MUA – they’re always amazing at makeup. for us normal gals, eyeliner and eyebrows are a constant struggle I think haha. don’t give up and do try this eyeliner it’s amazing!
