Healing Hawaiian Botanicals with Honua Skincare

A new green beauty brand on the scene, Honua Skincare is sharing their healing Hawaiian botanicals in their unique skincare formulas with a side of “aloha.”

Kapua and family of Honua Skincare

The Honua Skincare Story

Growing up on a Hawaiian island, Kapua was continually inspired by Hawaiian culture, natural healing Hawaiian botanicals, and positive, loving energy. As an esthetician and makeup artist in Hawaii, Kapua found herself reaching for healing ingredients right in her backyard and consistently used them to create products that would help clients. Her family later uprooted to California, but many friends back home still wanted access to her healing products and thus, Honua Skincare was born.

Honua

“Honua” means earth or land in Hawaiian and refers to every step in the Honua Skincare process. They utilize natural ingredients and work to give back to the earth by using recyclable, renewable, and eco-conscious ingredients and packaging.  A portion of proceeds go to native farms to replant the ingredients used in the Honua skincare products and the packaging also goes back to the earth once you’re done using it. Included with each product is an “aloha spirit message” inside each box that is meant to help spread love and positive vibes.

Honua Spirit Message

A:AKAHAI: KINDNESS, TENDERNESS
L:LOKAHI: UNITY, HARMONY
O:ʻOLUʻOLU: AGREEABLE, PLEASANT
H:HAʻAHAʻA: HUMILITY, MODESTY
A:AHONUI: PATIENCE, PERSEVERANCE

Healing Hawaiian Botanicals with Honua Skincare

Healing Hawaiian Botanicals in Honua Skincare

One of the lovely things about Honua Skincare is their use of natural Hawaiian botanicals. As you may know, I’m a huge fan of green beauty brands that source their ingredients locally and Honua does just that by utilizing a number of unique healing ingredients in their product formulations.

Olena – Hawaiian Turmeric

Olena AKA Hawaiian turmeric is a potent anti-inflammatory that helps address a number of skin issues including acne, skin inflammation (like dermatitis, eczema, or general redness), aging, sun damage and discoloration (hyper-pigmentation), and dehydration.

Noni – Noni

Noni is a great natural antioxidant that is rich in both vitamin C and selenium. Nourishing skin at a cellular level, noni can aid your skin with any number of concerns including hyper-pigmentation (sun damaged skin), dullness, dry skin, and acne. It can help to protect skin from free radical damage caused by pollution, the environment, stress, or any number of other outside factors.

Pa’akai – Hawaiian Salt

Pa’akai AKA Hawaiian Salt is a wonderful natural cleanser that’s rich in minerals and can bring life back to the skin while also gently exfoliating it.

Aila Kukui & Aila Kamani – Kukui & Tamanu Oils

Aila Kukui and Aila Kamani AKA Kukui and Tamanu oils offer a host of wonderful benefits to the skin. Tamanu is wonderful for acne troubles, skin regeneration, and is a great skin hydrator for all skin types. Kukui is high in omega fatty acids and helps to plump skin while hydrating as well. Chia seed is included in many product formulations for an added shot of potent omegas (the protein building blocks of skin) as well.

Awa – Kava

Awa AKA Kava is a root that is largely used for stress relief. In skincare, kava is included to help relax muscles, including facial muscles and wrinkles. It has also been shown to help soothe and calm the mind and may do the same for skin.

Alo Alo – Hibiscus

Kapua explained to me that alo alo AKA hibiscus has an effect on the skin that’s similar to AHA’s without the irritation. This can lead to a smoother and more even skin texture. It helps to tighten pores, firm the skin, and add a glow while also offering a dose of potent antioxidants.

Honua Hawaiian Beauty Water

Hawaiian Beauty Water

This Hawaiian Beauty Water is unique for a number of reasons. It’s formulated in a base of soothing organic coconut water alongside witch hazel and rose hydrosol. It utilizes hibiscus (pore-tightening!), exfoliating Hawaiian sugar cane and papaya enzymes, and soothing willow bark (acne!). It’s a brilliant formula and not a single ingredient feels wasted. Kapua created this product as a way to quickly exfoliate models’ skin during photo shoots in a way that would prep their skin for makeup without making a mess. After experiencing it for myself, I can definitely see why it works! It makes my skin feel super soft and glow-y! It also smells great and the toner is a wonderful prep alongside the Olena Face Oil. I can see this one becoming a regular in my makeup bag…

IngredientsOrganic Coconut (Cocos nucifera) Water (Aqua), Organic Rose (Rosa damascena) Hydrosol, Hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffa), Organic Witch Hazel (Hamamelis), Ko/ Hawaiian Sugar Cane(Sucrose),Willow Bark (Salix alba), & Papaya (Carica papaya) Enzyme

Honua Olena Oil

Olena Oil

The healing Olena Oil is ideal for any and all skin types. The base of this oil is an herbal infusion of turmeric, noni, and cacao in kukui and tamanu oils. Other ingredients in the formula are chia seed oil and rosemary for a natural preservative. This oil is very thick and feels super light on the skin. It’s ultra-hydrating. It doesn’t clog my pores in the slightest. It smells pleasantly herbal and works brilliantly with the Hawaiian Beauty Water right before makeup, just as Kapua intended. This is a definite win. I’ve only been using this oil for a few weeks, but I’ll be watching to see for the long term effects as I have a feeling they will be EPIC.

IngredientsOrganic & Wildcrafted Herbal Oil Infusions of ‘Ōlena (Curcuma long), Noni (Morinda citrifolia) & Cacao (Theobroma cacao) in Kukui Nut (Aleurites moluccans) and Kamani (Calophyllum inophyllum), & Chia Seed (Salvia hispanica), Organic Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) Antioxidant
