Going Blonde – Help Me Pick the Right Color!

So, I’ve been heavily considering going blonde. I’m not sure if I’ll go through with it because, yes, I am a chicken, but in all fairness, it’s a drastic change.

And since there are some of you out there who likely know a whole lot more about hair coloring and things than I do, perhaps you will kindly lend me some advice on the best way to go about doing it?

Here Are Some of My Favorite Shades/Tints of Blonde:

If you’ve read my “About Me” page, you’ll see that my hair is dark dark brown, nearly black so I want something that’s not SUPER extreme, but also a pretty nice change, if that makes sense. Also, I want something that won’t completely fry my hair for life haha.

Any advice, tips, etc that you can offer will be much appreciated!

Also, which of the blonde photos above is your favorite?

Wow your really going blonde?? That’s a commitment… You have dark brown hair right? I would advice not to go platinum blonde as it might be too agressive for the hair. I like the 3rd from last and also the last one. Are you sure you want to paint it all? instead of doing some highlights just to see if they suit your face and all?

I like the honey blonde in the second shot – You could even add some low-lights to make the transition a little easier. GOOD LUCK! <3

Brave you! Just make sure you get it down but an experienced professional.
I stupidly and drunkenly agreed to have my friend lighten my hair when I was at uni and I ended up with a mix of orange, brown and blonde. It was HORRENDOUS!
Incident apart, I would try and go for something a little bit darker and with more gold undertone, like hte last 3 pics.
Can’t wait to see the results if you go for it!

Yes I agree with nonfashionista third from the last is my suggestion 🙂 That way it´s not as drastic.

Definitely go to the salon! With hair as dark as yours the only way to get the blonde right is to pay and don’t go cheap or you’ll end up stripey. You need to go to a decent mid-range salon, in the UK I’d expect to pay anywhere between £100-£150 to get this right if I were you.

What you could do is introduce some flashes of colour below your root line, i.e. a layer of hair down and have it cut so it shows through. That might help you try it out?

Definitely highlights, don’t go for a block colour, if you go block and it’s platinum your eyebrows will stick out miles and if you go block and it’s a darker blonde, you risk an orange hue.

    That’s my advice anyway! x

I love your hair colour! And even though I know absolutely nothing about hair colour and dying, I think the golden brown shades might look good on you ( 2nd last and 3rd last picture). Can’t wait to see what you would settle with. Good luck! xx

Since I have some knowledge from my apprenticeship at Carlton, you could do two things before you try such a drastic move. I’m very much the type that wants a change a lot too, and my theory about hair is, “it grows back”, that said…I’ve gone platinum before and yikes!!!!! What a process. I have medium brown hair with lots of mahogany naturally, but have been doing it red for EvER, and in between blues, purples, black etc…
    So this is my advice…
Pick a color between your platinum choice, and the darker hues and do lots of panels. Make sure one is around your face so you have an idea of what it will look like on the blonde side. Peek-aboo panels are good.

Or what others said, highlights and maybe some low lights.

Btw, black damages your hair as much as going platinum…there are salons now that will do bleachless and no ammonia, try to do that.

Good luck, get a few consults too 🙂
