give back

You guys know how much I love to support my community in any way that I can whether it’s giving money, sponsoring someone, or preserving our precious environment. I’m all for donating to a good cause! Finding ways to give back to your local community can seem like a difficult endeavor, but there are lots of simple ways to do your part. Although I’m not made of money, I do take small steps to help my local community and you can, too! Here are my favorite ways to give back and promote a positive space in my neighborhood without spending any money.

7 Ways to Give Back to Your Local Community

Volunteer At A Soup Kitchen.

One cool way to help volunteer in your community is by giving your time to help out at a local soup kitchen or homeless shelter. They’re always short-handed and can use assistance in serving people food, cleaning, and simply giving comfort to others that need it. It might seem like a small step, but you can make a big difference to someone’s day and help out in your area.

Help the Elderly.

Often times, people forget about the elderly in the community, especially if they’re in assisted living homes or centers, but you can dedicate some time to helping out in one near you or simply going and talking to the elderly living there. Some of them may not have family (or maybe their family does not visit too often) and it’s great to go and speak with them. You will not only learn a lot from their life experience, but you might even make some new friends 🙂

Do Youth Outreach Or Tutor Kids.

Youth outreach is a great way to be a positive influence on the kids in your local area. You can take time out and tutor those who are having trouble with specific school subjects or simply start a youth program to be a positive driving force in your area. Think about your skill set. Are you really good at math, reading or languages? Can you start a youth sports league, art meet up, or teach music? All of these things are valuable and helpful ways to bring life and positive vibes to your neighborhood.

Plant A Community Garden.

While you might not want to give a TON of your time to local projects, starting a community garden is a great way to help others help themselves. Community gardens are great for feeding families and homeless that need it without having to give money. You can easily grow food in a local plot, rooftop, etc. Reach out to your community and do it together! Take turns planting and watering the garden and you will turn out more food than you know what to do with. It’s a great way to make sure that nobody in your neighborhood goes hungry.

Pick Up Trash.

If food isn’t something you think your neighborhood needs, then maybe you could take a day to go around with some friends and pick up trash. Separate your trash into recyclables and regular paper trash. If you find enough glass bottles and cans, you could even make some extra cash while doing a good deed!

Be Kind to Your Neighbor.

This is such a simple thing, but so many of us get so caught up in our daily lives that we forget about smiling and being courteous to others. Everyone is in such a rush, but I encourage you guys to get out of your comfort zone. Say hello to your neighbors, smile at them, and speak kind words. You never know how that will come back to you in some way or another. Plus, it just feels good to be nice to others. You might even find it improves your entire day.

Pay It Forward.

When someone in your community does something nice for you, try to pay it forward! Did someone open a door for you? Nice! Do the same for someone else. Pay forward some smiles. Buy someone’s morning coffee or breakfast if you have some extra cash. Give a dollar to the guy outside the gas station. Buy waters for the local homeless you always see hanging around. You never know how much you may be positively affecting someone’s life.

These seven ideas are a great starting point and offer something for everyone. I’m launching a campaign called Create To Donate this Fall in order to engage and inspire people to make something that will benefit a local nonprofit, so this post is right up my alley. I hope you’ll come and check it out!

I’d like to add one more suggestion–vote, and help register people in your community to vote. A lot of people don’t realize that even small, local school board elections can have a huge impact in their community. Want more art or music classes and fewer standardized tests? The school board has a huge impact on things like that. We often forget how much democracy requires our participation, not just in huge national elections, but in small, local ones as well. #weekendblogshare

That’s a great addition, Alexis! Thanks for sharing your thoughts here; I really appreciate it. I definitely think voting is so important to be involved with. My only gripe is that sometimes there are scammers who ask people to register to vote and just want to steal your information. Any idea how to avoid them or know which are legit and which ones aren’t? lol.
