7 Ways to Get Audrey Hepburn Style

Audrey Hepburn is, arguably, one of the most classic style icons of all time. Sure, there’s overplayed Marilyn Monroe (sorry), Bettie Paige, and more current divas like Madonna and Lady Gaga, but let’s be honest: Audrey Hepburn did it best. Not only was she an incredibly notable actress of her time, but she was also a humanitarian who put kindness above all else. Girls and women alike, including big time fashion designers, have reinvented and spun Audrey Hepburn style for decades now and it’s no wonder; her style is always elegant, classy, and never seems to be out of fashion. It’s for this reason I decided to come up with a few ways I think we can all get a little more Audrey Hepburn style in our lives because who doesn’t want that?

  • Slim Pants + Petal Pushers: I love the slim lines of all the pants Audrey wore. Whether petal pushers (cropped pants or high waters) or skinny pants (what they called cigarette pants), she always looked so minimal, but seriously flawless and chic. She looked polished without putting a ridiculous amount of effort in, or so it appeared and I think that’s what makes her style so enviable.
  • Pencil Skirts + Dresses: Again with the slim design, Audrey wore many pencil skirts and pencil dresses in her time and I think this is such a feminine way to accent the body without being all flashy. The cut of these dresses and skirts is still quite modest, especially now, but really flattering and sexy without looking desperate.
  • Voluminous Midi/ Maxi Dresses + Skirts: On the other end of the spectrum of Audrey style, she paired a lot of cardigans and tops with lovely voluminous midi and maxi dresses and skirts, giving her style a ladylike sensibility.
  • Ballet Flats, Cardigans + Coats: Most commonly, Audrey was shown in ballet flats and later on, as she got older, in flat boots. She also wore quite a few cardigans and long overcoats. Her outfits occasionally included color accents with a pink skirt or dress here and there or maybe a bold red lip, but most of them were largely monochrome or neutral color palettes.

  • Bold Brows: Audrey was known for her seriously bold eyebrows and they are a constant throughout any of her photos, even later in life, which I think is a big part of why she looked youthful even as she aged.
  • Red Lips: Although she didn’t use a whole lot of color or go crazy with makeup, she did occasionally rock a classic red lipstick with her outfits which made her, if that’s possible, even more classic.
  • Minimal Eye Makeup: As I said, Audrey didn’t wear a whole lot of makeup. Usually, she was photographed with bold brows, possible a red or pink lipstick, and maybe a cat eye or lightly lined eyes, only on the upper lid with some mascara to make it all pop. You really never see her wearing a whole lot of eye shadow or blush or even face makeup ( that I can tell ).

Be present, be grateful, and be kind.

At the end of the day, I really feel that one of the most valuable things we’ve gained from Audrey Hepburn has been her philosophy on life. Her words have a great value to them that I think we can all learn from. She was certainly wise beyond her years which she attributed to her experiences living in the Netherlands during the WWII Nazi invasion. The greater part of her later years were spent as a goodwill ambassador where she frequently worked on humanitarian efforts in Ethiopia. I think one of the most beautiful things about Audrey Hepburn is that despite being beautiful and stylish, she had great character and kindness in her soul. Ultimately, I think that’s what sets her apart from the rest.

    How in the world is Marilyn Monroe overplayed and not Audrey Hepburn?

      Haha it’s just my opinion, but personally I think Marilyn Monroe is a lot more mainstream than Audrey Hepburn. Marilyn Monroe has her own clothing line and is all over the place still. That’s just my personal thought

    I love her in the last photo! I always loved her makeup. It was simple and perfect for her. Nothing over the top or too heavy.

    I really like her style, maybe because I am myself rather minimalistic, I don’t use a lot of accessories or make up either.

      yeah I do too. I love the whole minimalist approve to it. I’m mostly in this category most days, but I occasionally enjoy glamming it up a bit also. I think I admire her more for her humanitarian efforts and wisdom.

    I admire Audrey and her personal style so much. Her granddaughter is supposed to have her own shoot with a big magazine coming out soon (I think it’s Vogue??). I’m excited to see that!
