beauty foods to add to your diet

Beauty comes from the inside out, quite literally. Unless you’ve been gifted by genetics (or unknown fairy gods), you’ve probably had to do some amount of work to get your skin in good shape otherwise, if you’re like me (hello, eczema and acne, it’s me…), you still struggle to obtain the ultimate flawless skin. Thankfully, the answer could lie with your diet and there are a ton of deliciously healthy food which can help you on your quest for clear, youthful, hydrated, and healthy looking skin.

Nuts and Seeds //

Pick your favorite because most nuts have wonderful benefits to them, namely their healthy fats, which help to keep skin healthy, hydrated and youthful-looking. Moreover, nuts like pumpkin seeds include valuable minerals such as zinc and magnesium. Plus, they make a great snack for keeping you full throughout the day between meals.

Cherries & Grapes //

Cherries are wonderful for helping you sleep better, evening out blood sugar, and they’re chock full of antioxidants. Plus, they’re delicious when added to smoothies and juice for a touch of natural sweetness! Grapes are a super delicious treat, especially when you freeze them. They’re full of valuable skin vitamins and antioxidants, notably resveratrol, which help defend against disease and aging.

Watermelon //

One of the most hydrating foods around, watermelon is over 90% water and it’s full of antioxidants and other vitamins and minerals which can benefit your skin and overall health. Plus, it’s deliciously sweet and can provide a healthy refreshment on hot days without any additives. Simply pop some into your blender and it’ll liquify into a delicious, dense drink.

Avocado //

Avocados are one of my favorite snacks because they’re a great source of healthy fats as well as vitamins and minerals. Plus, they’re great for adding creaminess and flavor to dishes as dressings, alongside grilled chicken or tofu (best combo EVER), and they make a great snack all on their own with a little sea salt. You can even have them on toast or baked with an egg for breakfast.

Berries //

Berries are potent source of antioxidants which nearly everyone knows are great for fighting off skin-aging free radicals. They’re also great for decreasing your risk of heart disease and cancer so there’s that. Plus, they make everything taste amazing. They add sweetness to smoothies, yogurt, and oatmeal without adding unnecessary amounts of sugar. My favorites include strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, goji berries, and cranberries.

Cucumber //

Hands down, cucumber is my favorite food. I could probably live off it if we never had winter (maybe even then). It’s an incredibly hydrating fruit (though my mind says fruit, my heart says veggie!) filled with TONS of minerals and vitamins you need. It’s even recommended that if you’re tired and need energy, it’s better to eat some cucumber because it’ll give you a nice boost without the crash that you would get from coffee, tea or energy supplements.

Carrots and Pumpkin //

As you may know, carrots and pumpkin are both high in beta-carotene (converts to vitamin A) and these are great for fighting off various diseases, aging in the body and your skin, and they taste delicious. Both taste best when cooked and it’s actually recommended that carrots be cooked as it helps release their enzymes more efficiently for you to absorb the benefits. Take that, raw food diet! #sorrynotsorry

Citrus Fruits //

Citrus fruits are a great way to fight off bacteria and boost your immunity. Moreover, they’re all high in precious vitamin C, are naturally cleansing and detoxing, and have a delicious mix of sweet and sour flavor to them that’s great infused in water, smoothies, juices, and in various other recipes!

Leafy Greens //

Leafy greens are a great way to get tons of vitamins and nutrients that you need alongside added fibers. They’re great for fighting off disease and they taste great both raw and cooked. Just be sure you add some healthy fat to the dish so you can absorb their fat-soluble nutrients.

Dark Chocolate (60% or higher) //

Dark chocolate is one of those foods that’s just plain delicious. Add in some sea salt and that’s my kryptonite, but thankfully, it’s also good for me. It’s good to aim for 60% or higher to keep the cacao concentrated and get the most antioxidant benefits for skin and health. Eating milk chocolate won’t suffice because the milk actually inhibits all the catechins and flavonoids.

Tea & Honey //

Tea is a delicious beverage, but many of them also have tons of health benefits. I’m sure you’ve heard about the benefits of green tea by now (unless you live under a rock), but there’s also white tea, rooibos tea, turmeric tea, ginger lemon tea, honey tea, dandelion tea, licorice tea, rose tea, mint tea, and even artichoke tea which all have various benefits for your health. Manuka honey and regular organic honey offer many benefits including their antibacterial properties which help us fight off illness, bacteria, and many more issues.

Spices //

When I say spices, I’m talking about ginger, turmeric, garlic, basil, spearmint, and oregano. Spices are a brilliant way to add flavor to food without adding more salt and they also offer many health benefits to help fight acne, aging, and also disease.
