Flashback Beauty: My High School Beauty Product Favorites + What I Use Now!

Back in high school, I was not to conscious of what I put on my face as I am now. I actually didn’t think too hard about any of it, to be honest. To be fair, beauty knowledge was not so easily accessible then as it is now. Drugstore products were my go-to and a lot of them, I still really love, but some of them are just awful.

Oxy Max Cleansing Toner Pads – These are God awful. They are really bad, but this is what I used. They were so infused with alcohol and other abrasive ingredients that they literally burned my skin! I had minor teenage hormonal acne breakouts around my chin area, but in hindsight, products like these likely made the breakouts worse. I remember I used to clean my face with these occasionally. Yuck! For breakouts now, I prefer to use the May Lindstrom Problem Solver, Alpha-H Balancing Moisturizer + Gentle Exfoliant, and good old Tea Tree EO as a spot treatment.

Maybelline Unstoppable Eyeliner in Black Kohl – This is one product I actually, to this day, still really love! This eyeliner is incredibly long lasting and pigmented. It’s one of the few eyeliners that seldom smudges and lasts all day long. Plus, the black is SUPER BLACK. Like, really dark. I will always love this one… If you want a comparable natural alternative, Lime Lily Cosmetics come close!

Carmex Original – I used this pretty daily because my lips were frequently dry and nothing else seemed to work for me at that time. To avoid all the harmful ingredients, I now use Suvana Beauty’s Paw Paw & Honey Balm. You can see my review for it here

Loreal Revitalift Face & Neck Cream – Back in school, I was super paranoid about aging and wrinkles. The only thing I think I may have done right is wear sunscreen every day. Using this cream, at the time, was awesome, but I think it was because I dried my skin out A LOT using crappy acne products (see above for examples) and needed a massive moisturizer to counteract all of that alcohol. If I tried to use this cream now, it would likely break me out. Not only that, but I’m still in my 20’s so it’s a little weird I was using this at 16 LOL.

Rimmel London Lash Maxxx Mascara – OMG! This is one product I would buy again in a heartbeat. I don’t know if it’s just because it’s nostalgic, but this stuff worked SO WELL! It’s not your average mascara. The wand was like a comb and you would brush it through your lashes in upward strokes. It worked seriously well for getting length AND volume. The only problem is I’m sure it ripped some of my eyelashes out LOL. BUT – I still got incredibly voluminous lashes. This is, depressingly enough, discontinued, but it looks like you still might be able to score one on Amazon!

Rimmel London Stay Matte Powder - This last item – Rimmel’s Stay Matte Powder – was a huge staple for me. I didn’t wear too much makeup at the time, but I wore this one every day. It was much lighter than my MAC Studio Fix Powder, which broke me out horribly by the way, so it was easier to wear this everyday just to control oil. I mostly wore it in translucent, but they do offer other shades and it’s actually a really great budget option as far as powders go. If you want a more natural option, I now use Alima Pure’s Satin Matte Powder Foundation which gives the coverage of MAC without the breakouts, clogged pores or harmful ingredients.

So, those were my main go-to products in High School!
