Whenever I’m doing my makeup with any extra thought, I always think first and foremost about what kind of a character I’d like to be that day. It’s probably because of my background as an actor that I’ve grown accustomed to giving every beauty and fashion look a kind of theme and attitude. After all, the shape of your brows can make you look younger, older, fierce, sweet, innocent, happy, sad, confident, sassy, and have many other effects depending on how you do it. There are so many different ones to choose from so I thought I would share some of the “character brows” I like to do myself, complete with photo examples and tips on how to get these affects yourself.
How to Use Brow Shape to Achieve Different Beauty Looks
These brows have lots of confidence and attitude. They know they’re sexy and flaunt their assets. To get these brows, you want a slight arch, but also some thickness so it still looks natural. You don’t want to overly sculpt the brows as this will make them look unnatural. Bombshells are “Maybelline Born With It” in the sense that they have awesome brows that just so happen to look perfect. You can get this shape by using a combination of brow powder and brow gel (for shape). NOTE: These brows give you TONS of confidence!
Bad Girl Brows (more on bad girl style)
Bad girl brows are all about attitude. They don’t care what they look like, but look awesome anyway and to hell with anyone who doesn’t love them at first sight. We’re too busy being badass to care anyway. To get bad girl brows, you want hardly any arch or maybe just a very faint one and lots of thickness. You can get this effect by using a combination of both brow pencil and powder. Use a brow gel as well if you have particular unruly brows or let your brows fly free and add to your wild child look! NOTE: These brows will make you look a little punk rock chic!
Gothic brows are ones you want to look super sculpted with sharper edges. You want your brows to look like they belong to a vampire or some other ethereal edgy creature of the night. To get this brow effect, draw your brows on thinner than usual, with a more defined line (as opposed to natural strokes that imitate your brow hairs). You want them to be super slim and almost boxy in their shape. To get this look, I recommend using a brow pomade or tinted gel that way you can use an angled brow to define the shape exactly as you want it. NOTE: These brows make you look super fierce and might not be flattering if you’re on the mature side. Thinner brows tend to make you look older and more severe, but I think if you pair it with some flattering makeup it should be fine. YOLO!
Youthful and Innocent Brow Shapes
Think Audrey Hepburn or more recently Lily Collins. You want thick, almost bushy eyebrows. You can get a super natural effect by lightly filling in your brows with a light colored brow pencil and blending the colors with a darker brow powder color. Then use a clean mascara wand and run the brush through your brows to blend all the colors. Your brows will look dynamic and natural, but very full. NOTE: These brows will make you look very youthful!
Au Natural Brow Shape
This last brow look is just for you! It’s custom to each person and is simply following the natural shape of your brows. Use only brow powder and a spooly clean mascara wand to blend the powder and groom your brows at the end for a very natural look. NOTE: These brows are perfect for everyday makeup and makeup free looks!
Romantic Brow Shapes
Romantic brows are very optimistic looking. They’re rounded out with little to no arch to give that look of awe. They also tend to make you look more innocent and have a very pretty effect. You can tailor these a bit as you like and make them more on the thin or thick side, depending on your taste. I prefer slightly thicker brows that are rounded out, but it’s up to you. You can get this look with brow powder and a little brow pencil to make sure the shape is rounded and not arched. NOTE: These brows might just make you fall in love with yourself! 😉
