Define Yourself: How to Use Brow Shape to Achieve Different Beauty Looks

Last Modified: November 14, 2017 at 3:09 pm by Tianna | Leave a comment

Whenever I’m doing my makeup with any extra thought, I always think first and foremost about what kind of a character I’d like to be that day. It’s probably because of my background as an actor that I’ve grown accustomed to giving every beauty and fashion look a kind of theme and attitude. After all, the shape of your brows can make you look younger, older, fierce, sweet, innocent, happy, sad, confident, sassy, and have many other effects depending on how you do it. There are so many different ones to choose from so I thought I would share some of the “character brows” I like to do myself, complete with photo examples and tips on how to get these affects yourself.

How to Use Brow Shape to Achieve Different Beauty Looks

Bombshell Brows

These brows have lots of confidence and attitude. They know they’re sexy and flaunt their assets. To get these brows, you want a slight arch, but also some thickness so it still looks natural. You don’t want to overly sculpt the brows as this will make them look unnatural. Bombshells are “Maybelline Born With It” in the sense that they have awesome brows that just so happen to look perfect. You can get this shape by using a combination of brow powder and brow gel (for shape). NOTE: These brows give you TONS of confidence!

Bad Girl Brows (more on bad girl style)

Bad girl brows are all about attitude. They don’t care what they look like, but look awesome anyway and to hell with anyone who doesn’t love them at first sight. We’re too busy being badass to care anyway. To get bad girl brows, you want hardly any arch or maybe just a very faint one and lots of thickness. You can get this effect by using a combination of both brow pencil and powder. Use a brow gel as well if you have particular unruly brows or let your brows fly free and add to your wild child look! NOTE: These brows will make you look a little punk rock chic!

Goth Brows

Gothic brows are ones you want to look super sculpted with sharper edges. You want your brows to look like they belong to a vampire or some other ethereal edgy creature of the night. To get this brow effect, draw your brows on thinner than usual, with a more defined line (as opposed to natural strokes that imitate your brow hairs). You want them to be super slim and almost boxy in their shape.  To get this look, I recommend using a brow pomade or tinted gel that way you can use an angled brow to define the shape exactly as you want it. NOTE: These brows make you look super fierce and might not be flattering if you’re on the mature side. Thinner brows tend to make you look older and more severe, but I think if you pair it with some flattering makeup it should be fine. YOLO!

Youthful and Innocent Brow Shapes

Think Audrey Hepburn or more recently Lily Collins. You want thick, almost bushy eyebrows. You can get a super natural effect by lightly filling in your brows with a light colored brow pencil and blending the colors with a darker brow powder color. Then use a clean mascara wand and run the brush through your brows to blend all the colors. Your brows will look dynamic and natural, but very full.  NOTE: These brows will make you look very youthful!

Au Natural Brow Shape

This last brow look is just for you! It’s custom to each person and is simply following the natural shape of your brows. Use only brow powder and a spooly clean mascara wand to blend the powder and groom your brows at the end for a very natural look. NOTE: These brows are perfect for everyday makeup and makeup free looks!

Romantic Brow Shapes

Romantic brows are very optimistic looking. They’re rounded out with little to no arch to give that look of awe. They also tend to make you look more innocent and have a very pretty effect. You can tailor these a bit as you like and make them more on the thin or thick side, depending on your taste. I prefer slightly thicker brows that are rounded out, but it’s up to you. You can get this look with brow powder and a little brow pencil to make sure the shape is rounded and not arched. NOTE: These brows might just make you fall in love with yourself! 😉

My brows need some serious attention! Love all this inspiration! 🙂 I just try not to overpluck – which is pretty challenging! 🙂

haha I feel like we’re all in need of brow inspiration now and again! Yeah I try not to pluck at all now since I did a little too much of that in high school.

i am for sure all about a good eyebrow. i joke with my husband about how my day is going to go if i “put eyebrows on” each morning. so if no eyebrows that morning, its gonna be a day. hah.

but they have taken a backseat here lately and really need a good tending too. gotta get it on my list of things to accomplish.

haha I know what you mean. Good eyebrows can really make or break your day! 😛

I think mine are probably pretty close to the natural ones, but I’ve always wanted a bit more definition for them. Love the inspiration!

    1. August 20, 2014 at 8:52 AM

Oo lucky! I wish mine looked like that without help haha. Thanks I’m glad – thanks for visiting ♥

I’ve been trying to do more full brows for fall. I’m kind of loving them, actually.

me too 🙂 I love thick dark brows personally so I’m constantly filling them in for that look. I think it’s so pretty and youthful.

I’ve always struggled with my eyebrows. Just something I can’t seem to master, lol. I do like the romantic eyebrows!

Yeah it can be annoying, but it’s a work in progress you know? We will get better as we go and practice. The romantic eyebrows are very pretty and I think they look nice with pretty romantic style. 🙂 Hope you try them out if you haven’t !

This might sound weird but I have been plagued by my eyebrows my whole life. They were too thick, then too thin. I just cannot figure out how to do them correctly! arg!!!

    1. August 20, 2014 at 8:51 AM

I know what you mean! I had extremely bushy eyebrows when I was young, so much so that I got too crazy with tweezing. Now years later I wish I’d left them alone because they’re now sparse, but unruly and the hairs grow incredibly slow! lol. That TBD brow tutorial is helpful if you need just a basic tutorial on how to do brows ♥

Love this post – eyebrows are so fascinating to me because there are so many ways to do them! I love that you included an underworld picture!!

    1. August 20, 2014 at 8:49 AM

exactly! I definitely agree. They can change the way your entire face looks. Haha I love that movie! Those were the best way I could imagine gothic eyebrows anyhow 😀

  10. August 19, 2014 at 9:42 PM

Can I just express how much I hate plucking my eyebrows?!? I really wish the au natural look was a good one for me, but that would require the unibrow to be back in style. Wait, was it ever in style, probably not. 😉

yeah I do too! My eyebrows are super unruly, but yet sparse in some places it’s completely annoying. I have to fill in my brows, though, otherwise they look super random lol.

  11. August 20, 2014 at 2:59 AM

Oh gosh, I am so boring with my eyebrows! I literally never do anything to them – that’s so bad isn’t it! I’m just really low maintenance which isn’t always a good thing!

haha no worries, it’s not for everyone. I know not everyone cares to do their eyebrows, but I think trying different makeup is a fun experiment as it can really change the way you look which is something I find fascinating. Low maintenance can be a good thing, I think – you get ready way faster than most girls then haha!

The thing with brows is that they can definitely make or break a look! I love how you categorized them! Beautiful!

definitely agree with that, but if someone is hesitant about doing their brows, they can always do simple looks instead of complicated ones and that ensures their brows look really nice without being too difficult you know? Glad you enjoyed the post 😀

  13. August 20, 2014 at 7:25 AM

I try to make sure my brow game is on point everyday 🙂

    1. August 20, 2014 at 8:55 AM

haha don’t we all? I am a completely crazy person when it comes to brow evenness. which can be cumbersome at times, but hey , it’s a work in progress! lol

As I started to read your post I was wondering what catagory I would fall in since I pay no attention to my brows when doing my make-up. So I guess I would fall under the Au Natural…but they seem to naturally be on the goth side. So I guess me being a night owl makes sense. lol

haha yeah I guess it’s a strange thing to think about – your eyebrows having personality and character of their own – but then these are the things that go through my mind all day haha. Gothic can be fun and I always feel like goth girls are so damn cool! Lol. But it’s too much work on the makeup upkeep IMO. Lucky you to get those brows without all the work!!

I hate to admit this but I usually don’t pluck my brows, nor shape them for that matter. I once shaved off half of my eyebrow and didn’t trust myself after. I’m too cheap to pay for a wax, but that is why I read blogs like yours. Reminds me to stay on top of my game.

  24. August 20, 2014 at 6:40 PM
