Death Note Inspired Rem Halloween Makeup Look
Over the weekend, I spent some time playing with makeup trying to create some fun and unique Halloween makeup looks.
This one is inspired by the character, Rem, from Death Note. If you’re unfamiliar, Death Note is an anime about a boy named Light who picks a death god’s “Death Note” notebook. His entire life changes when he finds out he can kill people by writing their name down in the Death Note and he begins killing criminals as a kind of twisted vigilante for justice.
Rem is a shinigami AKA death god who appears in the story. She’s a female, but looks a lot like a decaying undead skeleton. You can’t tell in the photo (because the lighting I have at my disposal isn’t very good atm), but I’ve actually done my face in a greyish tinted based so it looks more like Rem’s grey skin. I used Illamasqua’s cream pigment in Hollow. For lining my eyes and decorating my face, I used a number of deep purples and blacks, especially a deep dark purple shadow from Bobbi Brown which I’m pretty sure is called Eggplant or Plum. For lips, I used Manna Kadar’s true red lipstick in Russian with the Bobbi Brown eye shadow over the top.
You can recreate this look, if you like, by giving your skin a grey tint ( this can be achieved by mixing foundation with a grey colored eyeshadow) and lining your face and eyes with a dark purple or black. I chose purple to make it look a little more feminine because I think this look is pretty aggressive already with all the harsh lines.
The only accessories you would need are a grey bandana and some hoop earrings. You could line your decolleté to look like skeleton bones, if you wanted to, but it’s not necessary. You could also rock some bone necklaces and carry around a black notebook with the words Death Note on the cover, for authenticity’s sake, but it’s really up to you.
To be honest, I’m a little disappointed with how this turned out. I thought it was a really cool idea, but I didn’t have hoop earrings so the look is kind of incomplete and the grey base doesn’t show up as well as I’d hoped. That aside, I hope you can find some inspiration from this look, even if you don’t decide to recreate it exactly the same way as I did.
If you want to get the whole story of Death Note, you can watch it on Hulu for free – here.
