10 Shows You NEED to Binge Watch on Netflix

It’s been quite some time since I’ve posted about what I think you should binge watch on Netflix right now sooo I thought I’d share my top 10 TV shows that will take you right into fall – no #showhole needed!  If you’re not into sci-fi and fantasy, best to skip this list; that’s basically all I watch 😛

10 Fantasy Shows You NEED to Binge Watch on Netflix Right Now!

penny dreadful tv show

Penny Dreadful (2 seasons)

I’ve been obsessed with Penny Dreadful lately! The show mixes classic horror with Victorian England and turns every classic horror character you know on it’s head. The main character, Vanessa, battles inner (and outer) demons in this gothic show set at the turn of the century. I love that Vanessa plays such a strong-willed woman and that the show features so many power female characters in the cast. If you enjoy period fantasy, this is one you cannot miss!

x-files tv show

X-Files (9 seasons)

I’m prefacing this by saying that campy 90’s TV is not for everyone, but if you can look past the lack of effects, the story within the X-Files show is as brilliant and relevant as ever. The story focuses on Dana Skully, an FBI agent sent to join the X-Files (paranormal case unit within the FBI) in an effort to discredit brilliant, but idiosyncratic, FBI agent, Fox Mulder. The two form a friendship while uncovering paranormal mysteries that often (but not always) involve aliens, government cover-ups, and more. My boyfriend got me into this show and it’s one I thought I would hate. I ended up really loving the show and it’s characters. If you enjoy sci-fi/fantasy TV and government conspiracies, you will enjoy this one!

heroes tv show

Heroes (4 seasons)

I was a HUGE fan of the Heroes TV show when it was on and that hasn’t let up. The show has a huge cast of characters with special abilities (like super heroes with a genetics spin) who are all somehow connected to each other. The seasons all have different plots, but that central theme is present throughout the entire show. It’s definitely worth a watch if you enjoy super hero shows and films or sci-fi/fantasy themes that deal with genetics and evolution.

The Returned French TV Show

The Returned (French version – 2 seasons)

If you watched Resurrection, this is the French show that it was inspired by. The Returned is about a town in France where the town’s dead relatives begin to come back from the dead. If you want to watch this, definitely go for the French version and not the A&E version. The French one is WAY BETTER!

The Vampire Diaries TV Show

The Vampire Diaries (6 seasons)

I have talked a lot about The Vampire Diaries here because it’s one of my favorite shows; I even did a vampire makeup look based on it. I used to scoff at people who watched this show when it first came out and look at me now LOL. It turns out the show is really good if you can get passed the first few episodes (which are horribly cheesy). The show centers on the Salvatore brothers who are vampires and a human girl, Elena. This show gets better as it goes so definitely give it a watch if you enjoy vampire and horror shows; it’s worth it!

Lost Girl TV Show

Lost Girl (5 seasons)

All 5 seasons of Lost Girl are available on Netflix! You should definitely give this show a watch if you enjoy goth/fantasy. The show focuses on Bo, a succubus, who finds out she’s part of an ancient fairy race and her friend, Kenzie (best part of the show!), who helps her solve fairy crimes. It’s a little cheesy, but full of good story, lots of heart, and great fashion sense.

iZombie TV Show

iZombie (1 season)

iZombie is a comedy about Liv, a medical student who turns into a conscious zombie after one unlucky night of partying. She works in the morgue and discovers that she can see into the last moments of murder victims’ consciousness by consuming their brains. The only drawback is that she takes on their ticks and vices while the brain is in her system. This show has great moments of comedy, drama, and an awesome story! It’s definitely worth a watch if you enjoy comedy TV with a touch of horror.

The Walking Dead TV Show

The Walking Dead (5 seasons)

I don’t normally mention The Walking Dead on here because while I LOVED this show in the first 4 seasons, I got really bored of it after the 4th season and stopped watching it completely. That said, the show is amazing and lots of people love it for a good reason. The cast of characters are all stuck in a zombie-infested world. The beginning of the show begins the day the virus started to overrun society and goes from there. The characters all come from different backgrounds and it’s very much about survival. The show gets more and more messed up (and depressing) as it goes on LOL. If you enjoy zombie horror, this is one you cannot miss! Also, in my opinion, Fear the Walking Dead is WAY BETTER! It discusses the origins of the virus in The Walking Dead so also worth a watch!

The 100 TV Show

The 100 (2 seasons)

The 100 is about a group of kids sent down to earth to see if it’s still inhabitable. It’s a bit cheesy, in my opinion, and has a younger cast of characters, but the overall story is good. You will enjoy this show if you like space/sci-fi type shows!

The Originals TV Show

The Originals (2 seasons)

Last, but certainly not least, is The Originals. The Originals is a spin-off TV show in the same universe as The Vampire Diaries, but The Originals is set in New Orleans and focuses on the original family of vampires, New Orleans witches, and werewolves. It has such an awesome cast of characters, amazing New Orleans set and style, a wonderful soundtrack(!), and the story is really good (at least until season 4). If you enjoy a more traditional take on vampires, werewolves and witches, this is a great show to watch!

Other Shows to Consider:

American Horror Story (4 seasons), Once Upon A Time (4 seasons – skip season 4 IMO), Buffy the Vampire Slayer (7 seasons), Jessica Jones (1 season), Gotham (1 season), Sherlock (3 seasons), and The Secret Circle (1 season).

I remember when my super-macho dude friend told me we were going to spend Thanksgiving break watching Vampire Diaries and I judged him so hard for it, but…by the end of the weekend, I was hooked, hahaha. I love iZombie too! (I think I learned about that one from one of your previous posts! <3)

These are all good TV shows my husband would appreciate. He has watched almost all of these. I don’t think I could get him to give Penny Dreadful a try because there are only two seasons on Netflix.

I love sci-fi but haven’t seen too many of these, was a big X-Files fan back in the day and Season 1 of Heroes is fantastic. I heard it went a bit downhill after that – had intended to keep going but just never got back to it. And it seems like the creators of Vampire Diaries & The Originals must have been inspired by Anne Rice (LOVE her vampire books). I should check them out.

My “to-watch” list is already way too long but Penny Dreadful looks interesting as well. I was surprised not to see Stranger Things on the list – haven’t seen it either but I keep hearing good things.

Me too! I recently became an X-Files fan after my bf got me into it. Season 1 of Heroes is, admittedly, the best season, but the other seasons are still watchable/enjoyable IMO. Sadly, the writer’s strike happened after season 1 of Heroes and that’s largely the reason why the show changed direction so suddenly and got so convoluted. Still worth watching, though, in my opinion. The Vampire Diaries show is based on a book of the same name, but yes, in my opinion, it’s very much influenced by Anne Rice vampires, except without the weirdly sexual and often incestial undertones. The Originals is very similar to The Vampire Diaries because it’s a spin-off story of that show so it’s in the same universe. You’ll probably really enjoy these shows if you like Anne Rice and stuff like Queen of the Damned/Interview with a Vampire. It’s like a modernized version of those.

Penny Dreadful was amazing – very dark, creepy and haunting! Definitely one to watch if you enjoy gothic style Victorian horror. They put a spin on a lot of classic horror, which I loved, and it’s only 3 seasons total. Grimm is also really good, if you like dark fairy tales with crime drama mixed in (like X-Files only with fairy tale creatures, in my opinion).

I heard amazing things about Stranger Things, but I haven’t had a chance to watch it yet!
