how to have a more sustainable easter 2016

Much like any holiday, Easter can create a lot of waste, but the good news is there are plenty of to have a more sustainable Easter and they’re super easy to implement into whatever celebration you’re planning this weekend 🙂

7 Ways to Have A More Sustainable Easter

easter eggs

Dye Your Eggs the Natural Way via All Recipes // Did you know that you can naturally dye Easter eggs with purple cabbage or beets, turmeric, blueberries, spirulina, and other natural food items? It’s really insane how beautiful the eggs come out and you can even create fun patterns. I recently shared this incredible video from Handy where they demonstrate how to naturally color eggs on Facebook so definitely check that out if you want a visual on how to do this. It’s super easy – I was surprised by how easy it was and the effects are really pretty. Moreover, using natural foods to color eggs is a lot safer for people who plan on eating the eggs after and also a lot less damaging to the environment.

chocolate eggs

Make Your Own Chocolate Eggs via A Saucy Kitchen // Chocolate eggs are my favorite part of Easter, but purchasing candy for literally every single holiday is not only expensive, it’s also really wasteful. All the trash created by that ends up in landfills and, often times, isn’t easy to recycle, so it’s a better option to make your own Easter treats. For a more fruity and fresh dessert, try this amazing fruit frozen yoghurt layer cake from Lauren Caris Cooks!

fresh tulips flowers easter

Style Your Easter Table with Fresh Flowers via Style Me Pretty // Styling your Easter table with fresh flowers and plants is a great way to clean the air in your home and brighten up the room in a beautiful way for spring. Moreover, plants are, by design, biodegradable so you don’t have to worry about plastic or toxic decor that’s hard to recycle.

vegetables

Easter Dinner Recipes via Country Living // Easter brunch, lunch or dinner celebrations are great and it’s more sustainable to prepare the meal at home with friends and family than it is to go out and celebrate. This cuts down on waste and is actually a lot healthier for you as well. Also, incorporating plant-based dishes is also more sustainable for the environment as beef can be extremely damaging to the environment.

biodegradable wares

Biodegradable Serving Wares // If you want to make your meal at home and use your own serving ware, that’s totally fine and sustainable if you’re using your glass and ceramic plates, etc. If you are the kind of person who doesn’t want to do dishes (totally understand) for your Easter celebration and want to use paper plates, then I recommend you go for some biodegradable serving wares because if you must create the waste, then you’ll feel a lot better knowing that the waste will go, easily, right back to the earth when you’re done.
