green beauty does it better

There seem to be more waves of progress being made in green beauty every day and bloggers are commenting on it all the time. Whether it’s a call for more positive language in marketing campaigns instead of, the more commonly used, fear mongering tactics, misleading marketing phrases, or a request for green beauty brands to stop using various terms to aid in transparency, the green beauty world is certainly evolving and growing in a way like never before. It was only last year that I was able to walk into my local Sephora and actually see some credible green beauty brands – not just the greenwashing kinds – represented there on the shelves.

Now, it seems like every time I go in there, a new green beauty brand has taken up residence and I couldn’t be more thrilled.

As much as I love the transformation that’s happening in the beauty industry on the whole and the dialogue with consumers, bloggers, and brands who are seeking to find better, more ethical, sustainable, and transparent ways to create and market beauty products, I’m actually even more excited about all of the ways I’ve seen that green beauty does it better. After all, that’s really what got me into green beauty in the first place. Sure, there were the benefits of better health, a happier planet, cruelty-free products, and products that seemed to be of higher quality for around the same price point as mainstream ones, but the promise (and delivery) of results is what really hit home for me and I’m seeing it more and more with every top notch brand that ups their game.

Since I find it so impressive, I just wanted to share a few reasons I think that green beauty does it better and how these next-level ideals are forcing product standards higher and higher.

5 Reasons Green Beauty Does It Better

Top Notch Ingredients In Every Way.

One main area where green beauty does it better, in my opinion, is with their seriously high quality ingredients that have actually been shown to benefit the health of your skin without upsetting it’s natural balance. Not only do they use the highest quality plant ingredients (many times, with researched results), but many brands have opted to take things a step further by ethically sourcing sustainable ingredients as well. Brands like Kahina Giving Beauty also source their ingredients at the source to maintain quality, efficacy, and potency. Many others go even further to for fair trade, ethically ingredient sourcing, organic certification, and some even have cruelty-free and vegan certifications.

Sustainable Manufacturing and Packaging.

Aside from ethically sourcing sustainable plant ingredients that will actually benefit your skin in a holistic way, some other brands have chosen to take things a step further by using eco-friendly and sustainable manufacturing processes and conscious (often reusable or recyclable) packaging. Brands like Vapour Organic Beauty are run entirely on wind and solar power to create and package their products while others like May Lindstrom Skin, Antonym Cosmetics, MAHALO Skincare, Gressa Skin, KYPRIS Beauty, Josh Rosebrook, Alima Pure, The Little Alchemist, Leahlani Skincare, and One Love Organics craft their products in small batches, often by hand, to minimize carbon footprint and waste on top of using sustainable packaging like glass, bamboo, and recycled paper. Brands like The Konjac Sponge Company base their entire brand around using pure ingredients and all of their sponges are 100% biodegradable – how’s that for eco-friendly?

Ethical Business and Fair Wage.

While many mainstream beauty brands are still manufacturing products in sweat shops or practicing shady business, green beauty brands are working tirelessly to make sure their business practices are both ethical and fair. Many help support local developing economies and communities who help harvest ingredients, create products, and other initiatives which help these struggling communities earn a fair living. This is none more apparent than with Kahina Giving Beauty who have helped an entire community of Moroccan women to support their families or Marula Beauty who assist the local economy in Ghana.

Local Economy and Supporting A Good Cause.

While not everyone sources their ingredients overseas to help developing countries, many others do just as well with ingredients they source locally that can be just as eco-friendly, if not more so. Rainwater Botanicals uses natural organic, and wild-crafted ingredients which are almost all locally sourced and are able to maintain high quality products at a very affordable price. Vintner’s Daughter has a similar practice with more of a luxury level product (and price) and Mungo Murphy source their seaweed on the shores of their local Connemara. Herbfarmacy takes things a step further and makes all of their products from ingredients they grown on their own farm in the UK. Others, such as Jane Iredale, support causes like breast cancer awareness.

Multitasking Product Performance and Real Results (for Skincare & Makeup) that Work With Skin Instead of Against It.

Although all of these wonderful things make a great case for green beauty, I think the one thing that truly sends the message home is the fact that many green beauty products actually work a LOT better than mainstream. Can’t kick your acne breakouts? Try green beauty.

Looking for a foundation that has good coverage AND helps heal your skin? Green beauty might be the answer.

At the end of the day, no brand is perfect and I highly recommend you do your research before trying any of them if safe cosmetics, better skin, and planet-friendly options are important to you because there are tons of misleading terms out there and it’s important to choose products that reflect your values. If the whole thing confuses you, I’ve created an extensive green beauty brand guide where I’m sharing brands I know and love. This is including links to my reviews where possible as well as other helpful information on each one so you know which are all natural and organic, where they’re made, if they’re eco conscious, cruelty-free, vegan, etc. I also hope to include the charitable causes brands participate in where it applies as well. It’s an ongoing list so check back often ♥
