3 Ways Green Beauty Results In Younger Looking Skin

cover.jpg

I frequently get emails and messages from readers commenting on my skin and saying how I have perfect skin (I promise I don’t) and it wasn’t always this way. Contrary to what you might think, I was not born with good skin so I thought I would share a few solid beauty tips on what I do to keep my skin happy and how you can apply some of them to get the most flawless, youthful looking skin yet!

My best friend from high school said I look younger than everyone we know.

The weirdest thing happened to me the other day and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t absolutely jump for joy when it happened. My best friend from high school said I look younger than everyone we know. I laughed because, in total typical girl fashion, I didn’t believe him, but then I realized he’s a gay man and gay men tell no tales when it comes to looking good (or bad). So, I thought about it and, yeah, I think I probably do look pretty young, all things considered. I credit a lot of that to my mostly healthy diet, regular exercise and fitness routine, and of course, my green beauty routine. Mostly my green beauty routine!

You see, I’m almost 26 – the horror!! – and I could probably pass for about 5 years younger than that…

You see, I’m almost 26 – the horror!! – and I could probably pass for about 5 years younger than that, if not more if I dressed youthfully(?). This post is turning really odd, not at all how I imagined, but I promise the point of this post isn’t to blow my own head up. There is a point! Anyway, so basically, I don’t look old yet. YAY! My obsession (read:fear) with wrinkles is finally paying off, but I digress.

I don’t think my skin would look nearly as good as it does if it wasn’t for my iron-clad green beauty routine.

The point is, I don’t think my skin would look nearly as good as it does if it wasn’t for my iron-clad green beauty routine. It’s changing all the time, but there are some things that stay the same and I’m going to share a few things that I think have helped keep my skin looking youthful and how you can apply these things in your routine as well STAT.

…my skin looks better now than it did even in high school…

If I’m honest, I’ll say that my skin looks better now than it did even in high school. Back then, I used a strict routine of shock and awe to keep my acne, dryness, allergic reactions at bay and it only worked half the time. I used those horrible oxy-clean astringent pads which are glorified rubbing alcohols, Queen Helene face masks from Sally’s (they’re still pretty okay, though I’ve moved on to bigger and better things), and a chemical sh*t storm of products with ingredients I couldn’t pronounce and didn’t understand.

3 Ways Green Beauty Results In Younger Looking Skin

  1. Keep Your Skincare Routine All Natural, Clean and Green. Keeping your skincare to only (or mostly) all natural, green beauty products means that you’re less likely to irritate your skin, you get more antioxidant protection from free radical damage (like pollution) which helps combat aging, and utilizing natural products and developing a routine that works for you helps keep your skin calm, clear and happy. If you need advice on the best skincare products, check out my best green beauty of 2014 post!
  2. Treatments, Double Oil-Cleansing, and Hydration. Doing weekly or bi-weekly treatments (depending on your skin type) can really help to keep your skin bright, clear, and optimally hydrated. Treatments followed by hydrating face oils, serums and creams also ensures that your skin absorbs the maximum amount of beauty benefits. Double oil-cleansing is something I do religiously. If you don’t know what it is, let me explain. First off, double cleansing. Double cleansing is when you cleanse 2 times. The idea is that you cleanse one time to remove makeup and sunscreen and then you cleanse another time to remove debris, dead skin, etc. The problem with double cleansing and using conventional or mainstream products that include chemical ingredients, drying alcohols, and harsh formulas is that this can really dry your skin out. Using green skincare products, namely a cleansing oil or balm, ensures that you get 1. a deep cleanse and 2. do not strip the natural oils from your skin. Stripping oils can cause all kinds of damage from drying your skin out to premature aging, acne, and other irritations so you definitely want to use natural, hydrating products! The last thing is hydration. Once your cleanse and do your treatment(s), you want to hydrate as efficient as possible. The best order, I’ve found, is to apply a toner, serum, cream and then a face oil to seal everything in.
  3. Using Natural and Organic Makeup v. Mainstream Makeup. You might think there’s no major difference between using natural makeup or makeup from mainstream brands, but there are 2 notable differences that can have a HUGE effect on your skin over time. The first is the ingredients. Mainstream makeup brands often include toxic and harsh ingredients in their makeup products which include parabens, alcohols, and other harsh ingredients which can cause irritations, acne, and premature aging. The second difference is that natural makeup brands tend to utilize not only natural ingredients in their product formulas, but also anti-aging plant oils and extracts which can help heal acne, scarring, and fight off free radicals which can cause aging in your skin. If you are one of those people who frequently falls asleep with makeup on, then the effects of leaving your makeup on overnight when you utilize natural cosmetics is much less drastic (and could even benefit if the products include skincare ingredients) than when you wear conventional makeup products. Find the perfect natural makeup products here!

Of course, there are tons of other things you can do to get more youthful skin, but these are the main ones that have made a big difference for me in terms of my beauty routine. Other things you can do include eating a healthy, nutrient-rich diet with lots of lean protein, fruits, veggies and water, keeping up a consistent workout routine, maintaining a balanced life for minimal stress levels, getting enough sleep, and finding ways to be happy everyday.

Interesting post. I’ve started to switch to natural products two years ago, except for decorative cosmetics & make up, which I’ve only started very recently.

I am always worried tho, that using too much oil makes my skin even worse, as it already is quite oily by itself.

Using the right kind of face oil will NOT make your skin more oily. Actually, it does the opposite and should help your skin feel more balanced. If your skin breaks out or feels like it’s more oily, changing to a lighter face oil might help you. Let me know if you need any recommendations on a lighter face oil or on natural cosmetics. I’m happy to help any time 🙂 Also, there is a silver lining to having oily skin – did you know that you will always look younger because your skin is naturally more hydrated than dry skin types? Lucky you 😉

You have gorgeous skin! I definitely am going to start trying chemical free products. Fingers crossed they work!

    1. January 8, 2015 at 1:42 PM

Thank you 🙂 It’s not perfect, but it’s mine and I’ve put in a lot of work to get it looking…normal-esque haha. Definitely can’t recommend a natural skincare routine enough and natural makeup helps even more, though finding the right products that you like as much as the mainstream ones isn’t easy, but I’m figuring it all out slowly but surely and blogging it all haha. Let me know how it goes if you need any advice on good natural products to use, I’m happy to help! Write me anytime ♥ thanks for stopping by, Ivette!

I recently transitionned to using oils instead of mosturizer. Sadly, while I always had great skin (if I say so myself lol) because of all my hormonal issues at the moment I find myself breaking out a lot at the moment. I HATE it!

I’m sorry you’re having hormonal issues 🙁 That is never easy. There is hope, though! Pai Skincare is good for really sensitive skin types, even hormonal acne and stuff so I recommend you give them a try if you find moisturizers are breaking you out. Another more affordable one is Rainwater Botanicals – their troubled skin line is amazing and cheap! I hope you find good products for your skin ♥ try not to stress – that always makes it worse. glad to see you around here again Helene – missed you! ♥

Thanks for the advice, I might check them out. i’ve been using grapeseed oil. and while it worked wonderfully the first few month, my skin is itchy and spotty right now so I need to change something…
Anyway, I’m turning 30 in a couple of weeks…. SO I totaly understand how you feel about aging…

of course! I definitely agree. I never thought it did until I started reading about it and then realized “oh crap, I have acne because 1. I dry my skin out with alcohol-laden chemicals and 2. washing my face once still doesn’t remove all my makeup” which was a scary realization, but led to clear skin (mostly) so thank God for that haha.

  6. January 8, 2015 at 3:55 PM

Definitely with you on the natural skin care products! Your skin looks great! I really need to take care of my skin better. (I’ve at least started drinking more water and using moisturizer at night? 😡 )

I love this post. I only use natural beauty products on my face. I’m conscious of what I put on and into my body and I noticed a huge difference in the tonality and overall health of my skin when I started focusing on this. You look wonderful for any age!

    1. January 9, 2015 at 7:44 AM

Thanks I’m glad you do! I definitely think natural products make a huge difference and also being conscious of diet, health, environmental concerns, etc. also plays a factor in it as well. Thanks for stopping by Ana ♥

thank you Shannon! I know I felt special when it happened haha. I’m so lame I get all stupid when I get compliments like that. Honestly, going green with your routine might cause a few hiccups in the beginning, but over time, you’ll find that your skin looks even better than it ever has. I just put my friend onto natural skincare because he’s always complaining about breakouts, overly oily but dry skin, and just generally irritation. I just put him onto Kypris Beauty, Living Nature, and a few other green products and he called me yesterday to say his skin is looking super clear! He’s even gotten compliments about it so I feel really happy to help him out with it. Definitely can’t recommend it enough. Going green is the best thing I could’ve done for my skin.

  13. February 1, 2015 at 8:40 PM

You definitely don’t look 26! I’ve been thinking for a while to go more green friendly with my makeup for other reasons but reading through this post gave me even more reasons to consider! I think I need to look into it stronger now.

I don’t usually have problems with my skin as long as I put a little effort to it. In high school though, my skin was really bad. As guess as you get older your skin calms down a little bit or in my case it did.
